📋 Before You Start

  • Make sure your iPhone or iPad is updated to iOS 16.3 or later (iOS 17+ recommended)
  • Your Apple ID must be signed in to iCloud and the Home app
  • Connect your iPhone to your home Wi-Fi network (HomePod will join the same network automatically)
  • Enable Bluetooth on your iPhone
  • Place HomePod on a stable, flat surface with at least 6 inches of space around it for optimal sound

🔄 Step 1: Unbox and Power On

  1. Remove the HomePod from its box and peel off any protective wrapping
  2. Place it on a hard, flat surface — avoid soft surfaces like beds or couches that muffle the bass
  3. Plug in the attached power cable. The top of HomePod will glow white and pulse, indicating it is ready to pair
  4. Wait about 10 seconds for the chime — this confirms it is in setup mode

📱 Step 2: Hold Your iPhone Near

  1. Unlock your iPhone and hold it within a few inches of the HomePod
  2. A setup card will pop up on your iPhone screen — tap Set Up
  3. If the card does not appear, open the Home app, tap +, then Add Accessory
  4. Center the swirling light pattern on HomePod's top inside the camera viewfinder when prompted

🏠 Step 3: Assign to a HomeKit Room

  1. Choose an existing room (Living Room, Bedroom, Kitchen, etc.) or create a new one
  2. The room name matters — when you say "Hey Siri, play music in the kitchen," this is how HomePod knows where it is
  3. You can change the room assignment later in the Home app by long-pressing the HomePod tile and tapping the gear icon

🤖 Step 4: Configure Siri Settings

  1. Personal Requests: Enable this to let Siri read your messages, add reminders, and make calls. This only works when your iPhone is on the same Wi-Fi network
  2. Listen for "Hey Siri": Turned on by default. You can also just say "Siri" on newer firmware
  3. Siri Voice: Choose your preferred Siri voice and language in the Home app under HomePod settings
  4. Sound Recognition: HomePod can listen for smoke alarms and CO detectors — enable this in Home settings under Safety

🎵 Step 5: Set Up Music Services

  1. Apple Music works natively — just ask Siri to play anything from the catalog
  2. For Spotify, Pandora, Deezer, or other services, set your default music service in iPhone Settings > Apps > Siri > Music
  3. You can always AirPlay from any app to HomePod by tapping the AirPlay icon in your music player
  4. Ask "Hey Siri, what's playing?" at any time to get song info

📣 Step 6: Set Up Intercom

  1. Intercom lets you broadcast voice messages to every HomePod in your house, or to specific rooms
  2. It is enabled by default during setup — you can customize who receives Intercom messages in Home app settings
  3. Say "Hey Siri, Intercom dinner is ready" to broadcast to all HomePods
  4. Say "Hey Siri, Intercom to the bedroom, time to wake up" to target a specific room
  5. Intercom also works on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and AirPods

🎧 Step 7: Create a Stereo Pair

  1. You need two identical HomePods — two HomePod Minis or two full-size HomePods (same generation)
  2. Place both in the same room and assign them to the same HomeKit room
  3. Open the Home app and long-press one of the HomePods
  4. Tap the gear icon, scroll down, and select Create Stereo Pair
  5. Choose which speaker is Left and which is Right
  6. The pair now appears as a single speaker in AirPlay — enjoy room-filling stereo sound

💡 Pro Tips

  • Temperature & humidity: HomePod (2nd gen) and Mini have built-in sensors — ask "Hey Siri, what's the temperature in here?"
  • Home theater: Pair one or two HomePods with Apple TV 4K for Dolby Atmos surround sound via eARC
  • Automations: Use the Home app to trigger scenes — for example, "Good morning" can turn on lights, read weather, and start music
  • Handoff: Hold your iPhone near HomePod to transfer whatever is playing between devices
  • Touch controls: Tap the top to play/pause, tap + or - to adjust volume, long-press to activate Siri

⚠️ Troubleshooting

  • Setup card not appearing: Make sure Bluetooth is on, iPhone is on the same Wi-Fi, and restart both devices
  • HomePod not responding: Unplug, wait 10 seconds, plug back in. If still stuck, reset by holding the top for 15 seconds until the light turns red
  • No sound: Check that HomePod is not muted, and AirPlay is pointed at the right speaker
  • "This accessory is not supported": Update your iPhone to the latest iOS version
