📋 What You Need

  • Apple TV 4K (3rd generation recommended for best performance)
  • An HDMI cable — Apple TV 4K does not include one in the box. Use an HDMI 2.1 cable for 4K 120Hz HDR support
  • A TV with HDMI input — 4K HDR TV recommended for the best experience
  • Wi-Fi network or Ethernet cable (3rd gen Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi + Ethernet model has a built-in Ethernet port)
  • An iPhone for fast auto-setup (optional but highly recommended)
  • The included Siri Remote and USB-C charging cable

🔌 Step 1: Connect Apple TV to Your TV

  1. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into Apple TV and the other into an HDMI port on your TV
  2. Connect the power cord to Apple TV and plug it into a wall outlet
  3. If using Ethernet, plug the cable into the Ethernet port now
  4. Turn on your TV and switch to the correct HDMI input using your TV remote
  5. You should see the Apple TV setup screen with "Hello" in multiple languages

📱 Step 2: Auto-Setup with iPhone

This is the fastest way to get up and running — it transfers your Wi-Fi password, Apple ID, and settings automatically.

  1. Make sure your iPhone is on the latest iOS and connected to your home Wi-Fi
  2. Enable Bluetooth on your iPhone
  3. When Apple TV shows the setup screen, hold your iPhone near Apple TV
  4. A prompt will appear on your iPhone — tap Set Up
  5. Enter your Apple ID password if prompted
  6. Apple TV will automatically receive your Wi-Fi credentials and Apple ID — no manual typing needed

Manual setup: If you prefer not to use an iPhone, select "Set Up Manually" and use the Siri Remote to enter your Wi-Fi password and Apple ID. Click the touch surface on the remote and swipe to navigate.

🔐 Step 3: Sign In and Configure

  1. TV Provider: Sign in to your cable/satellite provider for live TV and on-demand content in supported apps
  2. Streaming Apps: Download and sign in to Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, YouTube, and more from the App Store
  3. HomeKit: Apple TV automatically acts as a HomeKit hub, allowing you to control smart home devices remotely
  4. One Home Screen: Enable "One Home Screen" in Settings > Users and Accounts to sync your app layout across multiple Apple TVs
  5. Screen Saver: Choose from stunning Aerial screensavers — underwater, space, landscapes, and city flyovers

🎨 Step 4: Calibrate Your Display

  1. Go to Settings > Video and Audio > Calibration
  2. Color Balance: If you have an iPhone with Face ID (iPhone X or later), hold it near the TV when prompted. The iPhone uses its light sensor to analyze your TV's color output and calibrates it automatically. This takes about 30 seconds and makes a noticeable difference
  3. HDR/Dolby Vision: Enable in Settings > Video and Audio > Format. Choose "4K Dolby Vision" if your TV supports it
  4. Match Content: Enable both "Match Dynamic Range" and "Match Frame Rate" in Settings > Video and Audio. This ensures movies play at their native frame rate (24fps) and HDR format
  5. Chroma: Set output to 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 depending on your TV and HDMI cable capability for the sharpest image
  6. Reduce Loud Sounds: Turn this on in Video and Audio settings to compress dynamic range for late-night viewing

🎧 Step 5: Set Up HomePod as Speakers

HomePod and HomePod Mini can serve as your Apple TV speakers, delivering Dolby Atmos surround sound without a soundbar.

  1. Make sure your HomePod(s) are in the same HomeKit room as your Apple TV
  2. Go to Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output
  3. Select your HomePod(s) as the Default Audio Output
  4. If you have a stereo pair of HomePods, they will automatically deliver left and right channels
  5. For the best surround sound experience, use two full-size HomePods (2nd gen) — they support Dolby Atmos with spatial audio
  6. Apple TV will switch audio to HomePod automatically when you start playback — no need to AirPlay manually

🎮 Step 6: Master the Siri Remote

  • Touch surface (top): Swipe to navigate, click to select. Swipe left/right during video to scrub through content
  • Back button: Press to go back. Long-press to return to the home screen
  • Siri button (side): Hold and speak — "Play Ted Lasso," "Search for action movies," "What did they just say?" (rewinds 15 seconds with subtitles)
  • TV button: Press to open the TV app. Double-press for the app switcher. Long-press for Control Center (sleep, audio output, user switching)
  • Mute button: Quick mute/unmute. Long-press to access accessibility shortcuts
  • Volume buttons: Control your TV volume via HDMI-CEC or IR — Apple TV learns your TV's volume automatically
  • Power: Long-press the TV button + Volume Down simultaneously to force-restart Apple TV
  • Charging: The Siri Remote uses USB-C. One charge lasts months

💡 Pro Tips

  • AirPlay: Mirror your iPhone, iPad, or Mac screen to Apple TV. Swipe into Control Center and tap Screen Mirroring
  • SharePlay: Watch movies or listen to music together with friends on FaceTime — synced across all screens
  • Game controller: Apple TV supports PlayStation DualSense, Xbox Wireless, and MFi controllers for Apple Arcade and other games
  • Use iPhone as remote: If the Siri Remote is lost, use the Apple TV Remote in iPhone Control Center
  • Multiple users: Each family member can have their own profile with personalized recommendations — switch in Control Center
