📋 Before You Start

  • You need an iPhone 6s or later running iOS 14.5 or later (iOS 17+ recommended for latest features)
  • Bluetooth must be enabled on your iPhone
  • Sign in to your Apple ID with Find My enabled (Settings > [Your Name] > Find My)
  • Enable Location Services for Find My (Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services)
  • For Precision Finding, you need an iPhone 11 or later (U1 chip or later required)

🔌 Step 1: Activate and Pair Your AirTag

  1. Remove the plastic wrap from your AirTag
  2. Pull the plastic battery tab sticking out of the side — you will hear a chime confirming the AirTag is powered on
  3. Hold the AirTag near your iPhone (within a few inches)
  4. A setup card will pop up on your iPhone screen — tap Connect
  5. If the card does not appear, open the Find My app, go to the Items tab, tap +, and select Add AirTag

🏷️ Step 2: Name Your AirTag

  1. Choose from preset names: Keys, Wallet, Backpack, Luggage, Jacket, Purse, Handbag, Umbrella, and more
  2. Or tap Custom Name to enter your own (e.g., "Car Keys," "Gym Bag," "Camera Case")
  3. Pick an emoji to make it easy to identify in the Find My app
  4. Tap Continue — the AirTag is now registered to your Apple ID

💼 Step 3: Attach to Your Items

  • Keys: Use an AirTag keychain holder or loop — Apple sells official leather and FineWoven options, and third-party holders are widely available
  • Wallet: Slip the AirTag into a card slot or use a slim wallet insert designed for AirTag
  • Luggage: Attach using a luggage tag holder or drop it inside a pocket
  • Backpack/Purse: Clip to an interior zipper pull or drop into a dedicated pocket
  • Bike: Use a mount designed to hide AirTag inside the frame or under the seat
  • Pet collar: AirTag holders that slide onto pet collars are popular (note: AirTag is not GPS — it relies on the Find My network)

🌐 Step 4: Find My Network & Locating Items

  1. Open the Find My app and tap the Items tab
  2. Tap your AirTag to see its current or last known location on a map
  3. Play Sound: Tap "Play Sound" to make the AirTag emit a loud chime — great for finding items nearby (under the couch cushion, in a coat pocket)
  4. Directions: Tap "Directions" to get Apple Maps navigation to the AirTag's last known location
  5. Lost Mode: Enable this if you have lost the item. You will be notified when it is found by the Find My network. You can also add a phone number or message that someone can see by tapping the AirTag with any NFC-capable phone
  6. Notify When Left Behind: Get an alert when you leave your AirTag behind at an unusual location

🎯 Step 5: Use Precision Finding

  1. Precision Finding is available on iPhone 11 and later (devices with Ultra Wideband / U1 chip)
  2. When you are within Bluetooth range of the AirTag, tap Find in the Find My app
  3. Your iPhone will show an arrow, distance, and haptic feedback guiding you directly to the AirTag
  4. The screen uses the camera, ARKit, accelerometer, and gyroscope for centimeter-level accuracy
  5. Works even in the dark — the screen acts as a flashlight during Precision Finding

👪 Step 6: Share with Family and Friends

  1. With iOS 17+, you can share an AirTag with up to 5 other people
  2. Open Find My > Items > tap your AirTag > scroll down to Share This AirTag
  3. Choose contacts to share with — they must also have an iPhone with iOS 17+
  4. Shared members can see the AirTag location, play sounds, and use Precision Finding
  5. This is perfect for shared items like family car keys or household items

🔋 Step 7: Replace the Battery

  1. AirTag uses a standard CR2032 coin cell battery that lasts approximately one year
  2. Your iPhone will notify you when the battery is getting low
  3. To replace: press down on the polished stainless steel back cover and twist counterclockwise
  4. Lift off the cover, remove the old battery, and insert a new CR2032 with the positive (+) side facing up
  5. Press the cover back on and twist clockwise until it clicks into place
  6. Tip: Avoid batteries with a bitter coating (like Duracell with "child-safe" coating) as they may not make proper contact

🔒 Privacy & Anti-Stalking Features

  • Unknown AirTag alerts: If someone else's AirTag is traveling with you, your iPhone will alert you automatically
  • Android detection: Android users can download the Tracker Detect app or use built-in unknown tracker alerts on newer Android versions
  • Sound alert: An AirTag separated from its owner for an extended period will play a sound when moved
  • Apple designed AirTag with privacy as a core feature — it cannot be used for covert tracking without triggering alerts
