📋 Before You Start

  • You need an iPhone 8 or later running iOS 17 or later (check Settings > General > About)
  • Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your iPhone
  • Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi
  • If upgrading from an old Apple Watch, unpair it first — this automatically creates a backup
  • Charge your new Apple Watch to at least 50% before starting setup

⚡ Step 1: Charge and Power On

  1. Place your Apple Watch on the included magnetic charging cable or dock
  2. Let it charge to at least 50% — setup can drain the battery quickly
  3. Press and hold the side button (below the Digital Crown) until you see the Apple logo
  4. Wait for the pairing screen with the swirling particle animation

📱 Step 2: Pair with Your iPhone

  1. Bring your iPhone near the Apple Watch — a pairing prompt should appear automatically
  2. Tap Continue on your iPhone
  3. If the prompt does not appear, open the Watch app and tap Pair New Watch
  4. Point your iPhone camera at the swirling animation on the watch face
  5. Once paired, you will see "Your Apple Watch is Paired" — tap Set Up Apple Watch

💾 Step 3: Restore from Backup or Set Up as New

  1. Restore from Backup: Choose your most recent Apple Watch backup. This restores your apps, settings, health data, and watch faces. Best if you are upgrading from a previous Apple Watch.
  2. Set Up as New: Start fresh with default settings. Choose this for your very first Apple Watch or if you want a clean slate.
  3. Sign in with your Apple ID when prompted — this enables Apple Pay, Find My, and App Store access
  4. Review and accept Terms & Conditions

🔐 Step 4: Configure Security and Settings

  1. Passcode: Create a 4-digit or 6-digit passcode. You can also enable the option to unlock your watch when you unlock your iPhone
  2. Wrist Detection: Keep this on — it locks the watch when removed and enables accurate health tracking
  3. Location Services: Enable for weather, Maps, and Find My to work properly
  4. Siri: Enable "Hey Siri" or "Raise to Speak" for hands-free voice commands
  5. Apple Pay: Add your credit or debit cards for wrist-tap payments

📷 Step 5: Customize Watch Faces and Apps

  1. Watch Faces: Swipe left or right on the watch face to browse. Long-press to edit complications and style
  2. Use the Watch app on iPhone > Face Gallery for more options — add weather, activity rings, calendar, battery, and more as complications
  3. App Layout: Choose Grid View or List View in Settings > App View
  4. Install Apps: In the Watch app, scroll down to Available Apps and tap Install next to the ones you want
  5. Notification Mirror: By default, watch mirrors iPhone notifications. Customize per-app in Watch app > Notifications

❤️ Step 6: Set Up Health Features

  1. Heart Rate Monitoring: Always on by default. Open the Heart Rate app to see real-time BPM
  2. Blood Oxygen (SpO2): Enable in Watch app > Health > Blood Oxygen (available on Series 6+)
  3. ECG: Open the ECG app on your watch and follow the on-screen instructions to take a reading (Series 4+)
  4. Fall Detection: Enabled by default for users over 55. Turn it on for all ages in Watch app > Emergency SOS > Fall Detection
  5. Crash Detection: Automatically enabled — detects severe car crashes and calls emergency services
  6. Sleep Tracking: Set up a sleep schedule in the Health app to track your sleep automatically
  7. Medical ID: Fill out your Medical ID in the Health app — it is accessible from the watch in emergencies even when locked

📡 Step 7: Activate Cellular (GPS + Cellular Models Only)

  1. During setup, you will be prompted to activate cellular. You can also do it later in Watch app > Cellular
  2. Your carrier will add the watch to your existing phone plan (most charge a small monthly fee)
  3. Supported carriers include AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and many international providers
  4. Once activated, the green dot on the Explorer watch face confirms cellular is connected
  5. With cellular, you can make calls, send texts, stream music, and use Siri without your iPhone nearby

💡 Pro Tips for New Apple Watch Owners

  • Water Lock: Turn the Digital Crown to eject water after swimming — Apple Watch is swim-proof but use Water Lock mode
  • Theater Mode: Swipe up for Control Center and tap the theater masks icon to silence and darken the screen
  • Screenshot: Enable in Watch app > General > Enable Screenshots, then press both buttons simultaneously
  • Ping iPhone: Swipe up for Control Center and tap the phone icon to make your iPhone play a sound — even if it is on silent
  • Battery: Most Apple Watches last 18–36 hours. Enable Low Power Mode for extended battery life
