iPhone Frozen or Unresponsive?

Screen stuck? Touch not working? Phone completely frozen? A force restart will fix most freeze issues without losing any data. Here's how to do it on every iPhone model.

⏱️ 1-2 min 💪 Easy 🔄 No data loss
✅ Good news: A force restart is completely safe and won't delete any of your data. It's like holding the power button on a frozen computer.

Force Restart Instructions

Find your iPhone model below and follow the steps. Do each step quickly, one after another.

iPhone 8, X, XS, XR, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, SE (2nd/3rd gen)

All modern iPhones with Face ID or Touch ID button on side:

  1. Press and quickly release Volume Up
  2. Press and quickly release Volume Down
  3. Press and hold the Side Button
  4. Keep holding until you see the Apple logo (about 10-15 seconds)
  5. Release when Apple logo appears
💡 Tip: Don't hold the volume buttons - just quick presses. Then hold ONLY the side button until the Apple logo appears.

iPhone 7 / 7 Plus

  1. Press and hold Volume Down AND Side Button together
  2. Keep holding both for 10-15 seconds
  3. Release when you see the Apple logo

iPhone 6s and earlier / SE (1st gen)

  1. Press and hold Home Button AND Top/Side Button together
  2. Keep holding both for 10-15 seconds
  3. Release when you see the Apple logo

What If Force Restart Doesn't Work?

1. Try Multiple Times

Sometimes it takes 2-3 attempts. Make sure you're doing the button sequence correctly and holding long enough (up to 20 seconds).

2. Charge Your iPhone

If the battery is completely dead, connect to a charger and wait 15-30 minutes before trying again.

3. Check for Physical Buttons

If your buttons are broken or stuck, the force restart won't work. You may need professional repair.

4. Connect to Computer

If force restart fails, try connecting to a computer:

  1. Connect iPhone to Mac (Finder) or PC (iTunes)
  2. Try the force restart sequence while connected
  3. If that fails, try entering Recovery Mode

Preventing Future Freezes

  • Keep iOS updated - Bugs that cause freezes get fixed
  • Free up storage - Low storage causes slowdowns and freezes
  • Close unused apps - Too many open apps use RAM
  • Restart regularly - Weekly restarts clear memory
  • Update apps - Old apps can crash and freeze
  • Delete problematic apps - If a specific app freezes your phone, delete it

If Your iPhone Keeps Freezing

Frequent freezes indicate a bigger problem:

  • Software issue: Try Recovery Mode restore
  • Storage full: Free up space
  • Battery failing: Old batteries cause crashes - check Battery Health
  • Hardware damage: May need professional diagnosis
