iPhone Stuck on Apple Logo? Here's How to Fix It
Your iPhone shows the Apple logo but never fully boots? This "boot loop" issue is frustrating but usually fixable. Follow these steps to get your iPhone working again.
Fixes to Try (In Order)
1 Wait It Out (Seriously)
Sometimes after an iOS update, your iPhone can appear stuck on the Apple logo for up to 15-30 minutes while it completes background tasks.
- Plug in your charger
- Wait at least 30 minutes
- If the progress bar under the Apple logo is moving (even slowly), let it finish
2 Force Restart
A force restart can break the boot loop without losing data.
iPhone 8 and later:
- Press and quickly release Volume Up
- Press and quickly release Volume Down
- Press and hold Side Button until you see the Apple logo disappear, then reappear
iPhone 7:
Hold Volume Down + Side Button together for 10+ seconds
iPhone 6s and earlier:
Hold Home + Side/Top Button together for 10+ seconds
3 Charge Your iPhone
Low battery during an update can cause boot loops.
- Connect to a wall charger (not computer USB)
- Use the original Apple cable if possible
- Wait 30 minutes, then try force restart again
4 Recovery Mode (Keeps Data If Possible)
Recovery mode lets you update or restore iOS through a computer.
Steps:
- Connect iPhone to computer with iTunes (Windows) or Finder (Mac)
- Enter recovery mode:
- iPhone 8+: Volume Up, Volume Down, then hold Side Button
- Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen (cable pointing to computer)
- Click "Update" first (this tries to fix iOS without erasing data)
- If Update fails, you'll need to use "Restore" (erases everything)
5 DFU Mode (Complete Restore)
DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is a deeper restore that can fix issues Recovery Mode can't. This will erase all data.
iPhone 8 and later:
- Connect to computer with iTunes/Finder open
- Press Volume Up, then Volume Down
- Hold Side Button until screen goes black
- While holding Side Button, also hold Volume Down for 5 seconds
- Release Side Button, keep holding Volume Down for 10 more seconds
- Screen should stay black - iTunes will say it detected a device in recovery mode
- Click Restore
6 Hardware Issues
If none of the above work, you may have a hardware problem:
- Failed storage chip: Common after water damage
- Logic board failure: Can cause boot loops
- Battery failure: Can't provide enough power to boot
These require professional diagnosis and repair.
Prevention Tips
- Always back up before iOS updates
- Keep at least 1-2GB of free storage
- Use a stable WiFi connection for updates
- Don't interrupt updates - keep phone plugged in
- Avoid jailbreaking unless you know what you're doing
Still Stuck?
If your iPhone is still stuck on the Apple logo after trying all these steps, it's likely a hardware issue that needs professional diagnosis.
