iPhone Storage Full?

Getting "Storage Almost Full" warnings? Can't take photos or install apps? Here are 10 proven ways to free up space on your iPhone - from quick wins to deep cleaning.

⏱️ 15-30 min 💪 Easy 💾 All iPhones

First: See What's Using Space

Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage

  • See total and used storage at the top
  • Color-coded bar shows what's taking space
  • Apps listed by size - biggest storage hogs at top
  • Tap any app to see its data vs documents

Quick Wins (Do These First)

1 Delete Old Messages & Attachments

Messages with photos/videos can use gigabytes of storage:

  1. Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Messages
  2. Review large attachments, photos, videos, GIFs
  3. Swipe left on conversations to delete
  4. Or auto-delete: Settings → Messages → Keep Messages → 30 Days or 1 Year

2 Clear Safari Cache & Data

Browser cache grows over time:

  1. Go to Settings → Safari
  2. Tap Clear History and Website Data
  3. This removes browsing history, cookies, and cached files

3 Delete Unused Apps

Apps you haven't used in months are just taking space:

  1. Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage
  2. Scroll down to see apps sorted by size
  3. Tap an app, then Delete App

Tip: Look at "Last Used" date - if it's months ago, delete it.

4 Offload Unused Apps (Keep Data)

Removes app but keeps its data for later:

  1. Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage
  2. Tap an app → Offload App
  3. Or enable automatic: Settings → App Store → Offload Unused Apps

The app icon stays on your home screen with a cloud icon. Tap to re-download.

Photo & Video Storage

5 Delete Duplicates & Screenshots

  1. Open Photos app
  2. Go to Albums → Utilities
  3. Check Duplicates - merge them to save space
  4. Check Screenshots - delete old ones you don't need
  5. Check Screen Recordings - these are HUGE

6 Empty Recently Deleted Album

Deleted photos stay for 30 days, still using space:

  1. Open Photos → Albums → Recently Deleted
  2. Tap Select → Delete All
  3. Confirm to permanently remove

7 Enable iCloud Photos (Optimize Storage)

Keep full-resolution photos in iCloud, smaller versions on phone:

  1. Go to Settings → Photos
  2. Enable iCloud Photos
  3. Select Optimize iPhone Storage
  4. Full photos are in iCloud; iPhone keeps smaller versions
⚠️ Requires iCloud storage: Free 5GB fills up fast. Consider 50GB ($0.99/mo) or 200GB ($2.99/mo) plan.

App-Specific Cleaning

8 Clear App Caches

Many apps store lots of cached data:

  • Spotify: Settings → Storage → Delete Cache
  • Netflix: Delete downloaded shows you've watched
  • Podcasts: Delete downloaded episodes
  • YouTube: Settings → History & Privacy → Clear Watch History

Nuclear option: Delete and reinstall the app to clear all cache.

9 Manage Offline Content

Downloaded music, movies, and maps take huge space:

  • Apple Music: Settings → Music → Downloaded Music → Edit to remove
  • Apple TV: Settings → TV → Downloaded Videos
  • Apple Maps: Settings → Maps → Offline Maps → delete old maps
  • Google Maps: Delete offline areas you no longer need

10 Review "Other" Storage

"Other" or "System Data" can grow large over time:

  • Siri voices, fonts, logs, cache
  • Hard to clear directly
  • Best fix: Back up to computer, then Erase All Content and Settings, then restore
  • This "re-packs" storage and typically recovers several GB
⚠️ Backup first! Only do this if you have a full backup and know how to restore.

Prevent Future Storage Issues

  • Enable iCloud Photos with Optimize Storage
  • Enable Offload Unused Apps
  • Set Messages to auto-delete after 30 days or 1 year
  • Regularly delete screenshots and screen recordings
  • Stream music/video instead of downloading

Need More Storage?

If you're constantly running out of space, consider upgrading to an iPhone with more storage, or using iCloud+ for photos and files.
