iPad Mini Screen Replacement Guide

The iPad Mini's compact size makes it portable but also makes screen replacement trickier. Components are packed tightly, so care is essential.

⏱️ 1-1.5 hours 💪 Moderate to Advanced 💰 $30-180 in parts
⚠️ Important Notes:
  • iPad Mini 6 has a completely different design (no home button, USB-C)
  • iPad Mini 1-5 have home buttons with Touch ID (Mini 3-5)
  • The small size means less margin for error
  • Flex cables are shorter and more fragile

📋 Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Power Off & Prepare

Shut down the iPad Mini completely. Place it face-up on a soft, clean surface. Cover cracked screens with clear packing tape.

💡 Mini 6 Note: The Mini 6 has a redesigned chassis similar to iPad Air 4. The repair process is different from Mini 1-5.
2

Heat the Top Edge

Start with the top edge (opposite the home button on older models). Apply heat for 2-3 minutes. The Mini's smaller size means it heats faster than larger iPads.

3

Insert Opening Pick

Apply a small suction cup and pull up while inserting a thin pick. The bezels are narrower on Mini, so be extra careful about insertion depth (2mm max).

4

Work Around the Edges

Heat, slide pick, insert another pick to hold. Work around all edges, being especially careful near:

⚠️ Danger Zones:
  • Mini 1-5: Home button flex cable at bottom
  • Mini 6: Cameras at top, USB-C at bottom
  • All: Antenna cables along the sides
5

Lift the Screen

For Mini 1-5, lift from the top like a page. For Mini 6, lift from the bottom. The display cables are located differently on each generation.

6

Disconnect Battery

Always disconnect the battery first! Remove the metal shield and use a plastic spudger to lift the battery connector.

7

Disconnect Display Cables

Remove shields covering display connectors. Carefully disconnect all flex cables by prying straight up. Mini cables are shorter, so be gentle.

8

Transfer Home Button (Mini 3-5)

Touch ID home buttons are paired to the logic board. You must transfer your original home button to the new screen for Touch ID to work.

9

Clean & Test

Remove all old adhesive from the frame. Connect the new screen and test everything — touch, display, home button — before final installation.

10

Apply Adhesive & Install

Disconnect battery, apply pre-cut adhesive, remove backing, align screen carefully, and press firmly around all edges.
