iPad Keyboard Not Showing

🔍 Why Keyboard Might Be Hidden

  • External keyboard connected — Bluetooth/Smart Keyboard hides on-screen keyboard
  • Keyboard minimized — It can be hidden at bottom of screen
  • Software glitch — Temporary bug hiding keyboard
  • Stage Manager — Can affect keyboard behavior

🛠️ Fix 1: Check for External Keyboard

External keyboards hide the on-screen keyboard:

  1. Disconnect any Smart Keyboard or Magic Keyboard
  2. Settings → Bluetooth → Check for connected keyboards
  3. Forget any Bluetooth keyboards temporarily
  4. Test if on-screen keyboard appears

🛠️ Fix 2: Look for Keyboard Icon

The keyboard may be minimized:

  1. Look at the very bottom-right of the screen
  2. Look for a small keyboard icon
  3. Tap it to bring up the keyboard
  4. Or tap and hold to see keyboard options

🛠️ Fix 3: Tap in a Text Field

  1. Open Notes or Messages app
  2. Tap directly in a text input area
  3. The cursor should appear and keyboard should pop up
  4. If not, try a different app

🛠️ Fix 4: Force Restart iPad

iPad with Face ID:

  1. Press and quickly release Volume Up
  2. Press and quickly release Volume Down
  3. Press and hold Top button until Apple logo

iPad with Home button:

  1. Press and hold Home + Top buttons together
  2. Hold until Apple logo appears

🛠️ Fix 5: Split/Merge Keyboard

The keyboard might be split or floating:

  1. If keyboard appears split (two halves): pinch together with two fingers
  2. If keyboard is floating (small): pinch outward to expand
  3. Or tap and hold the keyboard button → select "Dock" or "Dock and Merge"

🛠️ Fix 6: Reset Keyboard Dictionary

  1. Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPad
  2. Tap Reset → Reset Keyboard Dictionary
  3. This clears custom words but can fix keyboard issues

🛠️ Fix 7: Check Keyboard Settings

  1. Settings → General → Keyboard
  2. Make sure keyboards are listed under "Keyboards"
  3. Add English (or your language) if missing
  4. Toggle off third-party keyboards temporarily

🛠️ Fix 8: Disable Stage Manager (If Using)

  1. Open Control Center
  2. Look for Stage Manager icon (rectangles)
  3. Turn it off
  4. Test keyboard behavior

🛠️ Fix 9: Remove Third-Party Keyboards

  1. Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards
  2. Swipe left on any third-party keyboard (Gboard, SwiftKey, etc.)
  3. Delete it
  4. Test with only the default Apple keyboard

🛠️ Fix 10: Reset All Settings

  1. Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPad
  2. Tap Reset → Reset All Settings
  3. Won't delete data, but resets all preferences
  4. Test keyboard after restart

🛠️ Fix 11: Update iPadOS

  1. Settings → General → Software Update
  2. Install any available updates
  3. Keyboard bugs are often fixed in updates

⚠️ App-Specific Issues

  • Some apps have their own keyboard behavior
  • Try the keyboard in multiple apps to isolate the issue
  • Reinstall the problematic app if needed
  • Check app-specific settings for keyboard options
