iPad Not Charging? 10 Fixes That Work
iPad showing "Not Charging," charging painfully slowly, stuck at a low percentage, or showing no response when plugged in? These fixes cover all iPad models including iPad Air M3, iPad Pro M4, iPad mini 7, and older models.
iPad Wattage Requirements
iPads need significantly more power than iPhones. Using an underpowered charger causes "Not Charging" or very slow charging:
| iPad Model | Minimum Charger | Fast Charge (Optional) |
|---|---|---|
| iPad (standard) | 12W | 18W+ |
| iPad Air M1/M2/M3 | 20W | 30W+ |
| iPad mini 6/7 | 20W | 30W+ |
| iPad Pro M1–M4 (11") | 20W | 45W+ |
| iPad Pro M4 (13") | 30W | 65W+ |
Step-by-Step Fixes
1 Use the Right Charger
- Check the wattage of your charger (printed on the brick or adapter)
- Use at minimum a 20W USB-C charger for most modern iPads
- iPad Pro M4 13" needs at least 30W for reliable charging under load
- A MacBook USB-C charger (30W–96W) works great for iPad
2 Inspect and Clean the Charging Port
Lint, debris, and pocket fluff in the USB-C or Lightning port prevent proper connection:
- Shine a flashlight into the charging port and look for debris
- Use a dry wooden toothpick to gently remove compacted lint — never use metal
- Compressed air can also clear loose debris
- Try plugging in firmly after cleaning — the connection should feel solid
3 Try a Different Cable
USB-C cables fail more often than people realize:
- Try a different USB-C or Lightning cable
- Use an Apple or MFi-certified cable — cheap cables frequently cause "Not Charging"
- Check the cable for kinks, fraying near the connector, or loose fit
4 Try a Different Power Source
- Switch from a USB hub or computer port to a direct wall outlet — USB hubs rarely supply enough power for iPad
- Try a different wall outlet
- If using a USB-C hub with passthrough charging, ensure it supports at least 60W passthrough
5 Force Restart the iPad
Fixes charging detection glitches where the iPad is receiving power but not registering it:
iPad with Face ID (iPad Pro, iPad Air M1+):
- Press and release Volume Up
- Press and release Volume Down
- Hold the Top button until the Apple logo appears
iPad with Home Button:
- Hold Home + Top (Power) for 10 seconds until Apple logo appears
6 Charge When Cool
iPads won't charge (or charge very slowly) when overheated — a safety feature:
- If the iPad is hot from gaming, video, or being in the sun — let it cool for 15-20 minutes before plugging in
- Remove any heavy case that traps heat while charging
- An "iPad needs to cool down before charging" message may appear
7 Check Optimized Battery Charging
Optimized Battery Charging holds at 80% overnight to extend battery lifespan:
- Go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging
- If you need 100% quickly, tap "Charge Now" to override the hold
- This is normal behavior — not a malfunction
8 Update iPadOS
- Go to Settings → General → Software Update
- Install any pending updates — charging behavior fixes are common in iPadOS updates
9 Check Battery Health
- Go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging
- If battery capacity is below 80%, the battery is significantly degraded and may not hold charge well
- Apple considers below 80% eligible for battery replacement under AppleCare
10 DFU Restore (Last Resort)
A software-level charging issue can be resolved by a full DFU restore:
- Connect iPad to a Mac or PC with iTunes/Finder
- Enter DFU mode (steps vary by model — search "iPad DFU mode [your model]")
- Restore from the computer
