iPad Frozen or Unresponsive? Here's the Fix
When your iPad screen freezes and won't respond to touches, don't panic. This guide shows you how to force restart your iPad and prevent future freezes.
🚨 Immediate Fix: Force Restart
A force restart will unfreeze your iPad without losing data.
iPad with Home Button (iPad 6th gen and older, iPad mini 5 and older):
- Press and hold Home button + Power button together
- Keep holding for 10-15 seconds
- Release when Apple logo appears
iPad without Home Button (iPad Pro, iPad Air 4+, iPad mini 6):
- Quickly press and release Volume Up
- Quickly press and release Volume Down
- Press and hold Power button
- Keep holding for 10-15 seconds until Apple logo appears
🔍 Why Does iPad Freeze?
- App crash — a buggy app can freeze the whole system
- Low storage — iPads need free space to function properly
- Outdated software — bugs in older iPadOS versions
- Too many apps open — overwhelms available memory
- Overheating — can cause temporary shutdowns
- Hardware issue — failing components (rare)
📋 Prevent Future Freezes
1. Keep Storage Free
Check Settings > General > iPad Storage. Keep at least 5GB free. See our storage guide.
2. Update iPadOS
Settings > General > Software Update. Updates fix bugs that cause freezes.
3. Update Apps
Open App Store > your profile > Update All. Outdated apps may be incompatible.
4. Close Unused Apps
Swipe up from bottom and pause, then swipe up on app cards to close them.
5. Restart Weekly
A regular restart clears memory and prevents buildup of issues.
🔧 If Force Restart Doesn't Work
iPad completely dead?
- Charge for at least 30 minutes
- Try force restart again
Stuck on Apple logo?
- Connect to computer with iTunes/Finder
- Force restart while connected
- Choose "Update" when prompted (this preserves data)
Nothing works?
You may need to enter Recovery Mode or DFU mode for a restore. This erases data, so try everything else first.
⚠️ Signs of Hardware Problems
If your iPad freezes frequently despite trying all software fixes, it may have hardware issues:
- Random freezes daily — possible memory or storage chip failure
- Freezes when touched in certain spots — digitizer damage
- Freezes when hot — internal thermal issues
- Freezes when battery low — battery degradation
Frequent Freezes?
If your iPad keeps freezing after trying these fixes, it may need professional diagnosis.
