iPad Storage Full? How to Free Up Space
When your iPad runs out of storage, it slows down and can't download apps, take photos, or update. Here's how to reclaim space and keep your iPad running smoothly.
📋 Step 1: Check What's Using Space
Go to Settings > General > iPad Storage
This shows you exactly what's taking up space, sorted by size. Common culprits:
- Photos — often the biggest offender
- Videos — downloaded movies/shows
- Apps — especially games with large data
- Messages — old attachments add up
- Safari — cached websites
- "Other" / System Data — caches and logs
📋 Step 2: Delete Unused Apps
In iPad Storage, scroll down to see all apps. Tap any app to see options:
- Offload App — removes app but keeps data (reinstall later)
- Delete App — removes everything
Look for apps you haven't used in months. Games often take 1-5GB each!
📋 Step 3: Optimize Photos
Photos and videos are usually the largest storage consumers.
Option A: Use iCloud Photos
- Go to Settings > Photos
- Enable iCloud Photos
- Select Optimize iPad Storage
This keeps full-res photos in iCloud and thumbnails on iPad. Requires iCloud storage subscription.
Option B: Delete Old Photos/Videos
- Open Photos app
- Go to Albums > Videos (videos are bigger)
- Select and delete videos you don't need
- Empty Recently Deleted folder!
📋 Step 4: Clear Safari Cache
Safari stores gigabytes of website data.
- Go to Settings > Safari
- Tap Clear History and Website Data
This logs you out of websites but can free significant space.
📋 Step 5: Delete Old Messages
Message attachments (photos, videos, files) accumulate over years.
- Go to Settings > Messages
- Under Keep Messages, change from Forever to 1 Year or 30 Days
- Or manually delete old conversations
In Messages, you can also tap a conversation > person's name > See All Photos/Attachments to delete specific items.
📋 Step 6: Remove Downloaded Content
Streaming apps download content that takes space:
- Netflix/Disney+/etc — delete downloaded movies
- Spotify/Apple Music — remove downloaded songs
- Podcasts — delete old episodes
- YouTube Premium — clear downloaded videos
📋 Step 7: Clear "Other" / System Data
The mysterious "Other" or "System Data" category includes caches, logs, and Siri data. To reduce it:
- Restart your iPad — clears temporary caches
- Delete and reinstall large apps — removes app caches
- Backup and restore — the nuclear option, clears all caches
💡 Prevent Future Problems
- Use iCloud Photos with Optimize Storage
- Stream music instead of downloading
- Delete watched videos promptly
- Set Messages to auto-delete after 1 year
- Periodically review iPad Storage
- Consider a larger iPad next time (64GB fills fast)
