Your Spam Block Plan

iPhone's Built-In Spam Defenses

Silence Unknown Callers (iOS 13+)

Settings → Phone → Silence Unknown Callers. Calls from numbers NOT in your Contacts go directly to voicemail. Massive reduction in interruptions but blocks legitimate first-time callers (e.g., new business contact).

Live Voicemail (iOS 17+)

While someone leaves a voicemail, you see a real-time transcription on your iPhone. Decide whether to pick up. Spam callers don't talk — they hang up. Game-changer for triage.

Block Specific Numbers

Recents → tap (i) next to a number → Block this Caller. Adds to your block list. Settings → Phone → Blocked Contacts to manage.

Carrier-Provided Filtering

AT&T Active Armor, T-Mobile Scam Shield, Verizon Call Filter — built into your carrier's network, label spam calls or auto-block at the carrier level. Most are free.

Third-Party Blocker Apps

Hiya, RoboKiller, Truecaller — third-party apps that maintain spam databases. Better detection than carrier filters, requires permissions.

STIR/SHAKEN (Carrier-Level)

Federal mandate (2021): carriers verify caller ID. Calls now show "Spam Likely" or "Verified" indicators. Helps but doesn't eliminate spam.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Silence Unknown Callers block 911 callbacks? No — 911 callbacks bypass Silence Unknown Callers. Emergency calls always come through.
What if I call a doctor and they call back?If they call back within a short window, the call usually comes through. Otherwise, save their number to Contacts in advance, OR check voicemail/transcription.
Can spammers spoof my own number?Yes — and many do. Block caller ID-spoofed calls from yourself. Settings → Phone → Block Contact (your own number).
How do I report spam calls?Recents → tap (i) → Report as Junk → choose category. Reports go to Apple + carrier. FCC complaint at fcc.gov/consumers/guides/stop-unwanted-calls-and-text-messages also helps.
Can I block political calls?Political calls are exempted from Do Not Call Registry. Use third-party app (Hiya, RoboKiller) for political call blocking. Most have a "Political Calls" filter.
Why do I get spam calls when my number is on Do Not Call list?DNC list is voluntary. Many spammers ignore it (overseas operations). DNC stops legitimate telemarketers but not scams.
What if a third-party app sells my contacts?Truecaller has been flagged for this. Hiya + RoboKiller have stronger privacy practices. Check apps' privacy policies before granting permissions.
Can I block a whole area code?iPhone doesn't natively support area code blocking. Third-party apps (RoboKiller, Hiya) can. Or use Focus modes to silence everything except contacts.
How do I see who called when Silence Unknown Callers blocked?Recents tab shows all calls, including silenced. Voicemail also captures.
What about spam texts?Different setting: Settings → Messages → Filter Unknown Senders. Carriers also offer spam text filtering.

The Last-Resort Option: Number Change

Changing your number stops 90%+ of spam, but...Major impact: must update all bank/medical/business contacts, lose contacts who can\'t reach you, may break 2FA setups. Only do as last resort.

If your number was leaked in a data breach + spam is unmanageable:

  1. Get new number from carrier (most charge $0-25 per change)
  2. Use Google Voice as a "public" number for online forms
  3. Keep your real number private — only share with trusted contacts
  4. Update banks, medical, employer with new number
  5. Update 2FA on critical accounts before changing
  6. Set up call forwarding from old number for 60-90 days
