Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my US iPhone in [country]?Yes. iPhone supports global cellular bands. You'll need an eSIM, roaming plan, or local SIM (older iPhones).
How does eSIM work?Buy eSIM on Airalo/Holafly app before trip. Receive QR code via email. Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → scan QR. Instant cellular service in destination.
Will my phone number still work?Yes. iMessage, FaceTime, calls/texts continue via your US number (over WiFi or cellular). Use eSIM for data, US plan for messaging.
Can I have two cellular plans active?Yes. iPhone supports Dual SIM. Settings → Cellular → choose which line for which purpose.
What about hotel/airport WiFi?Use Personal Hotspot from local SIM or eSIM if hotel WiFi is bad. Many hotels include WiFi but it's often slow or unreliable.
Is Apple Pay safer than credit card abroad?Yes. Apple Pay tokenizes — merchant never sees your card number. Skim-proof.
What if my iPhone is stolen abroad?Find My iPhone works globally. Lock from another Apple device or icloud.com. Report to local police + your carrier.
Should I get an Apple Watch with cellular?Cellular Apple Watch only works on US carrier in US. Internationally, Apple Watch relies on iPhone Bluetooth proximity for cellular fallback.
What about Translation?Settings → General → Language & Region → Translation Languages → download offline languages BEFORE trip. Translation app works offline.
How does iCloud Photos work abroad?Auto-uploads on WiFi (don't drain eSIM data on photos). Settings → Photos → Cellular Data → toggle OFF for travel.

Common Travel Mistakes

1. Auto-uploading iCloud Photos on cellular.Burns through eSIM data fast. Disable cellular for Photos before trip.
2. Not testing eSIM before departure.Buy + activate at home before you leave. Verify it works on departure day.
3. Forgetting offline maps.Apple Maps + Google Maps both let you download offline regions. Do this on home WiFi before flying.
4. Not enabling international texts in iMessage.Settings → Messages → Send as SMS toggle OFF. Forces iMessage (free over WiFi internationally).
5. Using ATM cards with foreign transaction fees.Use Apple Pay where accepted; carry no-foreign-transaction-fee credit card (Charles Schwab, Capital One Venture).
6. Buying eSIM in country at airport.Often 2-3x the price of pre-booked eSIM via Airalo. Buy before you fly.
