Why M1 Is Still Worth Buying in 2026

The M1 (Apple's first ARM chip, 2020) is still excellent:

  • Faster than every Intel MacBook ever made
  • 20+ hour battery life
  • Runs all current macOS versions (will support macOS for at least 4-5 more years)
  • Apple Intelligence supported (M1+ devices)
  • Can edit 4K video, run Final Cut, Logic, Xcode at acceptable speed

The newer M2/M3/M4 chips are 25-50% faster, but M1 is the floor of 'still feels modern.'

M1 Pro vs M1 — Which Refurb to Get

Two M1 lines exist:

  • MacBook Pro M1 (2020) 13-inch: $700-900 refurb. Standard M1 chip. Liquid Retina display (60Hz, no ProMotion). 13-inch only.
  • MacBook Pro M1 Pro (2021) 14/16-inch: $1,200-1,500 refurb. M1 Pro chip (more cores). Liquid Retina XDR display (mini-LED, ProMotion 120Hz). 14 or 16-inch.

If you want the premium display + Pro chip experience, M1 Pro 14-inch refurb at $1,200 is great. If you just want an M-series MacBook Pro on a budget, the M1 13-inch at $700 is the entry point.

Where to Buy Refurbished

  1. Apple Refurbished Store (apple.com/shop/refurbished) — Apple-tested, 1-year warranty. Best peace of mind.
  2. Amazon Renewed — varied quality, 90-day warranty
  3. Best Buy Outlet — open-box deals, store warranty
  4. Swappa — peer-to-peer, no middleman, but no warranty
  5. eBay — risky; only buy from sellers with 99%+ feedback

For MacBook Pro M1, Apple Refurbished is the safest. Prices are similar to private sellers but with Apple's warranty + return policy.

RAM Matters More Than Year on M-Series

An M1 with 16GB RAM is significantly better than an M2 with 8GB RAM. Apple Silicon shares RAM between CPU and GPU, so 8GB feels cramped quickly. Recommendations:

  • Get 16GB minimum for any M-series MacBook
  • If buying refurb, look specifically for 16GB / 512GB configs
  • Avoid 8GB / 256GB configs — they hit limits within 2 years

M1 Refurb vs New M4 — When to Pick Each

Pick M1 refurb ($800-900) if:

  • You're price-sensitive (saves $700-800 vs new M4 14-inch Pro)
  • You're a casual user (browsing, email, Office, light photo)
  • You don't need the mini-LED display
  • You're a student on a tight budget

Pick new M4 ($1,599+) if:

  • You do pro video/audio/3D work daily
  • You want the mini-LED display + ProMotion
  • You need the latest software with full warranty
  • You're buying for 6+ year ownership
