Cost Breakdown — All Options

Where Cost Wait Notes
iCloud Backup (recommended)Free up to 5GB10–60 minAutomatic; works while charging
Mac Backup (Finder)Free5–30 minFaster than iCloud; requires cable
Windows Backup (iTunes/Apple Devices)Free10–40 minWorks but slower; requires cable
Cloud + Local (belt-and-suspenders)Combination—Most reliable for irreplaceable data

Method 1: iCloud Backup (Easiest)

  1. Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup
  2. Toggle on Back Up This iPhone
  3. Tap Back Up Now
  4. Plug into power and connect to Wi-Fi (required)
  5. Wait — first backup can take 30–60 min depending on data size
  6. When done, last backup time shows next to 'Back Up Now'

If iCloud storage is full: You have 3 options: 1) buy iCloud+ ($2.99/mo for 200GB), 2) delete old backups in Settings → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Backups, 3) use Mac/PC backup instead (free, no storage limit).

Method 2: Mac Backup (Fastest)

  1. Connect iPhone to Mac via cable
  2. Open Finder (macOS Catalina+) — iPhone appears in left sidebar
  3. Click your iPhone in the sidebar
  4. Under Backups, choose Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac
  5. Optional: check Encrypt local backup (saves passwords, Health, HomeKit)
  6. Click Back Up Now
  7. Wait — typically 5–30 min

Mac backups are stored in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/. Don't manually delete this folder.

Method 3: Windows (Apple Devices App)

  1. Install the Apple Devices app from Microsoft Store (replaces iTunes)
  2. Connect iPhone via cable
  3. Trust the computer when prompted on iPhone
  4. Click your iPhone in the left sidebar
  5. Under Backups, click Back Up Now

Windows is slightly slower than Mac but works fine. iTunes (older PCs) still works for now but Apple is phasing it out.

Belt-and-Suspenders: Always Do Both

For irreplaceable data (kids' photos, business contacts, custom Health data), do iCloud backup AND a local Mac/PC backup. iCloud is convenient but cloud services have outages. Local backups are reliable but you lose them if the computer dies. Both = safest.

Total time investment: 30–45 min. Time investment if your phone is wiped during repair without a backup: hours/days/never recovering some data. Always back up.

After the Repair — How to Restore

If your iPhone got wiped or replaced during repair:

  1. Boot the new/restored iPhone
  2. At the Setup screen, choose Restore from iCloud Backup (or Restore from Mac/PC)
  3. Sign in with your Apple ID
  4. Pick your most recent backup
  5. Wait — restore can take 30 min to 2 hours; keep iPhone plugged in
  6. Apps and data restore in the background after initial setup completes
