iPhone widgets are way more powerful than most users realize. Smart Stacks learn your habits, large widgets show way more info than icons, and iOS 18 lets you tint and customize everything. Here's how to use them.

Smart Stacks — Set It and Forget It

Smart Stacks contain multiple widgets stacked together. iOS automatically rotates which widget shows based on time of day and usage:

  • Morning: Calendar + Weather
  • Lunch: Restaurant Recommendations + Maps
  • Evening: Music + Podcasts + Reading list

Add a Smart Stack: long-press home → + → search 'Smart Stack' → Add Widget Stack. iOS picks intelligent widgets based on your habits.

Best Widgets to Add

  1. Calendar (large): Today's full schedule visible at a glance
  2. Weather: Current temp + hourly forecast
  3. Battery: All your devices' battery levels (iPhone, Watch, AirPods, AirTags)
  4. Photos / Memories: Random photo from your library
  5. Reminders: Today's tasks
  6. Find My: Track where loved ones / AirTags are
  7. Music: Recently played + 'For You'
  8. Notes (Quick Note): Latest note

Tint and Customize (iOS 18)

Long-press home screen → Edit Home Screen. New options:

  • Tint widgets (apply color overlay)
  • Resize: small, medium, large, extra-large (some widgets)
  • Move widgets between pages
  • Apple Maps and other apps now have multiple widget styles

Lock Screen Widgets

Lock Screen widgets are smaller (just 4 pre-set slots) but always visible without unlocking the phone:

  1. Long-press unlocked lock screen → Customize → Lock Screen
  2. Tap the widget area
  3. Add up to 4 small widgets or 2 medium
  4. Recommendations: Activity rings, Weather, Calendar, Music

StandBy Mode — iPhone as Smart Display

iOS 17+ added StandBy Mode. Charge iPhone in landscape orientation (sideways) — it transforms into a bedside smart display:

  • Clock + calendar by default
  • Swipe between widgets, photos, and clocks
  • Add custom widgets
  • Wake to Siri at night ('Hey Siri, set alarm 7am')

Best with a MagSafe charger that holds the iPhone landscape — the Anker MagGo 3-in-1 or Spigen StandBy chargers.

Power-User Widget Tip — Interact Without Opening

iOS 17+ widgets are interactive. You can:

  • Check off Reminders directly from the widget
  • Play/pause music
  • Toggle smart home devices (Home widget)
  • Mark Calendar events as done

Tap directly on widget elements — actions happen without opening the app.
