Step 1: Wait 30+ Minutes (Sounds Stupid, Works)

iOS updates can legitimately take 30–60 minutes. Apple's progress bar moves erratically — sometimes hangs at 95% for 20 minutes before completing. Don't immediately assume it's stuck. Plug in to power, walk away, come back in 30+ min.

Step 2: Force Restart

If progress bar hasn't moved in 30+ min:

  • iPhone 8 and later: Press Vol Up → Vol Down → hold Side button until Apple logo appears (10+ seconds)
  • iPhone 7: Hold Vol Down + Side until Apple logo
  • iPhone 6s and earlier: Hold Home + Side until Apple logo

Force restart is safe — it doesn't erase data. Solves 50% of stuck-update cases.

Step 3: Recovery Mode — Update (Preserves Data)

If force restart fails:

  1. Connect iPhone to a Mac (Finder) or PC (Apple Devices app)
  2. Force iPhone into Recovery Mode:
    • iPhone 8+: Vol Up → Vol Down → hold Side until you see the recovery-mode screen (cable + computer icon)
    • iPhone 7: Hold Side + Vol Down until recovery screen
    • Older: Hold Home + Side until recovery screen
  3. On computer, you'll see a popup: choose Update (NOT Restore) — Update preserves your data
  4. Wait — typically 30 minutes
  5. If iPhone times out during update, repeat from step 2

Step 4: Recovery Mode — Restore (Erases Data)

If Update fails repeatedly:

  1. Same procedure as Step 3, but click Restore instead of Update
  2. This erases iPhone and reinstalls iOS
  3. You'll lose data not backed up to iCloud or Mac
  4. After restore, set up as new or restore from backup

Step 5: DFU Mode (Last Resort)

Device Firmware Update mode bypasses the bootloader entirely. Use only if nothing else works.

  1. Connect iPhone to Mac/PC
  2. Power off iPhone
  3. Hold Side button for 3 seconds
  4. While holding Side, also press and hold Vol Down for 10 seconds
  5. Release Side, keep holding Vol Down for 5 more seconds
  6. Screen stays black — you're in DFU mode (correct)
  7. Computer detects iPhone — choose Restore

DFU mode is finicky. If you see the Apple logo, you went too far — try again.

Avoiding This Next Time

  • Always back up before iOS updates (we have a backup guide)
  • Update over Wi-Fi, not cellular (fewer interruptions)
  • Plug in to power during update
  • Don't update while battery is below 50%
  • Wait a week after major iOS releases (e.g., iOS 19.0 → wait for 19.0.1)
