Set Up Your Own Screen Time Limits

  1. Settings → Screen Time → Turn On Screen Time
  2. Pick 'This is My iPhone'
  3. Set Screen Time Passcode (DIFFERENT from your phone passcode)
  4. App Limits → Add Limit → pick category (Social, Entertainment) or specific app
  5. Set duration: e.g., 1 hour total per day
  6. Choose days (every day, weekdays only, etc.)

iPhone notifies you when limit reached. You can extend limit via passcode (defeats purpose if you have it set easily).

Schedule Downtime — Phone Bedtime

  1. Settings → Screen Time → Downtime
  2. Schedule: e.g., 10:00 PM – 7:00 AM
  3. During Downtime, only allowed apps work
  4. Apps not in 'Always Allowed' show grayscale icons + are blocked

Most users allow: Phone, Messages, Maps, Health, Apple Watch app. Block social media, games, news. Helps with sleep.

Family Screen Time — Kids

  1. Set up Family Sharing (Settings → Family)
  2. Add child Apple ID (Apple ID for child requires you to verify)
  3. Settings → Family → kid's name → Screen Time
  4. Set limits, downtime, content restrictions
  5. Approve apps requested by child
  6. Receive weekly reports of their usage

Children can't override or bypass without your Screen Time passcode (entered remotely).

Content & Privacy Restrictions (Parental Controls)

Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions. Detailed controls:

  • Block specific apps
  • Block in-app purchases
  • Restrict explicit content in Music, Books, App Store
  • Block adult websites
  • Restrict camera, location services, contacts access per app
  • Prevent profile installation (stops sketchy iOS profiles)

Communication Limits

  1. Screen Time → Communication Limits
  2. During Allowed Time: who can call/text (everyone, contacts only, specific list)
  3. During Downtime: tighter restrictions

For kids: prevent contact with strangers. For adults: prevent late-night work texts during Downtime.

Honest Take — Does Screen Time Actually Work?

Studies are mixed. Self-reported screen time goes up by ~25% in users who don't enable Screen Time. Among those who DO enable it:

  • ~30% reduction in target app usage in first month
  • Most users disable limits within 6 months (familiarity, frustration)
  • Most effective when combined with downtime + grayscale lock screen

For kids: more effective. Combined with family sharing + content restrictions, it's a meaningful tool.
