iPhone Personal Safety Features Guide 2026

iPhone has serious personal safety features built in — most users never set them up. Emergency SOS, Crash Detection, Check In, Stolen Device Protection, and Find My are critical. Here's how to enable each one.

Set Up Emergency Contacts

  1. Open Health app → tap your profile photo → Medical ID
  2. Tap Edit
  3. Add Emergency Contacts (family, partner, close friends)
  4. These contacts auto-bypass Do Not Disturb when they call you
  5. They also auto-receive your location when you trigger Emergency SOS

Set this up once, save lives later.

Crash Detection — Already On

iPhone 14+ and Apple Watch Series 8+ have Crash Detection on by default. If a severe crash is detected:

  • iPhone calls 911 after a 10-second countdown
  • Notifies your emergency contacts with location
  • Continues sharing location for 24 hours

You can dismiss false positives during the countdown by tapping Cancel.

Check In — Auto-Share Location During Travel

iOS 17+ added Check In for safe travel:

  1. Open Messages app
  2. Tap a conversation with a trusted contact
  3. Tap + → Check In
  4. Choose 'When I arrive' (auto-completes when you reach destination) or 'After a timer' (sends update if you don't check in)
  5. If you don't reach the destination or check in, Apple shares your location, route, battery level, and last unlock time with the trusted contact

Brilliant for solo travelers, late-night returns, dating, or any situation where you want a safety net.

Stolen Device Protection (iOS 17.3+)

If a thief sees your passcode and steals your iPhone, they could traditionally use it to lock you out of your Apple ID. Stolen Device Protection prevents this:

  1. Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Stolen Device Protection
  2. Toggle on

Now if the iPhone is in an unfamiliar location, sensitive changes (changing Apple ID password, disabling Find My, viewing saved passwords) require Face ID — no passcode fallback. Plus a 1-hour delay on the most-sensitive changes (Apple ID password) gives you time to mark the phone lost.

Satellite SOS (iPhone 14+)

Lost in a remote area with no cell signal? iPhone 14+ supports Emergency SOS via Satellite. When you try 911 and it fails, iPhone offers 'Emergency Text via Satellite'. Walk through pointing the phone at a satellite, type your emergency. Free until at least 2025+.

Test it once: Settings → Emergency SOS → Try Demo (where supported). Demo doesn't actually call EMS — just walks through pointing at a satellite.
