First — Is This Your Phone or the Carrier?

Before troubleshooting, check:

  1. downdetector.com — search your carrier (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.) for outage reports
  2. Try calling someone — if it works, your service is OK and the 'No SIM' is a display bug
  3. Try mobile data — open a website. If it loads, you have service despite the error

If service IS working but 'No SIM' shows, the iPhone display is wrong but cellular is fine. Restart fixes it.

Physical SIM — Reseat Carefully

  1. Power off iPhone (prevents short risks)
  2. Find the small hole on the SIM tray (right side on most iPhones)
  3. Insert SIM eject tool, push firmly until tray pops out
  4. Remove SIM card, blow on contacts to remove dust
  5. Inspect — see scratches or oxidation? Try cleaning with soft cloth
  6. Reinsert SIM, push tray fully closed
  7. Power on iPhone

eSIM — Re-Add via Carrier App

If you have eSIM (most US iPhones 14+):

  1. Open your carrier's app (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile)
  2. Look for 'Manage SIM' or 'Activate Device' option
  3. Choose 'Reactivate eSIM' or 'Transfer to this device'
  4. Follow the prompts — most carriers complete the eSIM re-add in 5 minutes
  5. Restart iPhone after

If your carrier app doesn't have this option, call them — most can re-issue the eSIM remotely.

Reset Network Settings

Last software-side fix:

  1. Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
  2. Tap Reset → Reset Network Settings
  3. Enter passcode
  4. iPhone restarts and refreshes all cellular state
  5. You'll lose Wi-Fi passwords (re-enter them after)

When It's Hardware

Hardware SIM issues are RARE. They typically show:

  • 'No SIM' persists after reset network + reseat SIM
  • SIM tray feels loose or doesn't lock in place
  • Visible damage in the SIM tray slot
  • Liquid damage indicators tripped

Apple cellular antenna/modem repair runs $300–$500. Often easier to replace the iPhone for these issues.
