iMessage Not Working: Fix Guide 2026

iMessage 'Activating'? Texts sending as green SMS instead of blue iMessage? Photos failing to send? iMessage requires multiple things to work together — Apple ID, cellular/Wi-Fi, time zone, and more. Here's the diagnostic ladder.

First Check — Apple System Status

Before troubleshooting your phone, check if iMessage IS the problem. Visit apple.com/support/systemstatus. If iMessage shows yellow or red, it's an Apple-side outage — wait it out, no fix needed. Outages typically resolve in 30–90 minutes.

If Apple Status Is Green — Your Phone

  1. Toggle iMessage off, wait 10 seconds, on. Settings → Messages → iMessage. Forces re-registration.
  2. Verify your phone number is selected. Settings → Messages → Send & Receive. Your phone number AND Apple ID email should be checkmarked.
  3. Check your time zone. Settings → General → Date & Time → Set Automatically should be ON. Wrong time zone breaks iMessage authentication.

If Activation Fails Repeatedly

  1. Settings → Messages → iMessage off
  2. Settings → [Your Name] → tap your name at top → Sign Out
  3. Restart iPhone
  4. Sign back in with Apple ID
  5. Settings → Messages → iMessage on
  6. Wait 1–24 hours for activation (sometimes Apple is slow)

Green vs Blue Bubbles

  • Blue bubble = iMessage (sent over data; works between Apple devices)
  • Green bubble = SMS (sent over cellular; falls back when iMessage fails)

If your texts are SUDDENLY going green for someone they used to be blue with:

  • That person may have switched to Android (iMessage doesn't work there)
  • Their iCloud account might be deactivated
  • Your iMessage is broken — toggle off/on (Steps above)

RCS in iOS 18 — New Behavior

iOS 18 added RCS (Rich Communication Services) for messaging Android users. RCS messages still appear green but support typing indicators, read receipts, larger photos, and group features that SMS doesn't. If your green messages now have RCS features, that's intentional. If you don't see RCS features with Android contacts, your carrier may not support it yet.
