Find My iPhone shows the wrong location, says 'Offline', or won't update? It's almost always a software setting, not actual location loss. Here's how to fix it.

First — Verify the Settings

  1. Settings → [Your Name] → Find My
  2. Tap Find My iPhone
  3. All three toggles should be ON:
    • Find My iPhone: ON
    • Find My network: ON (lets it work even when offline)
    • Send Last Location: ON (sends final location before battery dies)
  4. If any are off, the device won't appear in Find My

Check Location Services

  1. Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services — Location Services must be ON globally
  2. Scroll down to System Services at the bottom
  3. Tap System Services
  4. Toggle on Find My iPhone if not already

Location Services must be enabled for Find My to report position. If you turned it off to save battery, that's why the location is stale.

If 'Offline' Persists

Find My shows 'Offline' when the iPhone:

  • Has no cellular and no Wi-Fi connection (in airplane mode, dead zone, or off)
  • Has been off for more than ~24 hours (then it falls back to Find My network — Bluetooth ping from nearby Apple devices)
  • Has Find My network disabled (see above)

If the iPhone IS connected and powered on but still shows 'Offline':

  1. On the iPhone: turn Find My off in Settings, wait 30 sec, turn back on
  2. Restart the iPhone
  3. Sign out of iCloud and sign back in (preserves data on device)

AirTag, AirPods, Watch — Different Issues

  • AirTag offline: AirTag uses other Apple users' iPhones to relay location. If no one has walked past it in 24+ hours, it shows offline. The location won't update until someone with iPhone passes within Bluetooth range.
  • AirPods offline: Open the case lid near your iPhone. AirPods report location when the case is open and Bluetooth-connected.
  • Apple Watch offline: Watch reports through paired iPhone OR via cellular (if cellular Watch). Cellular Watch should always update.
