Face ID Not Working with Mask? How to Set It Up
Apple added the ability to use Face ID while wearing a mask starting in iOS 15.4. If your iPhone still asks for your passcode every time you put on a mask, this guide covers how to enable and troubleshoot Face ID with a mask, set up Apple Watch unlock as a backup, and add alternative appearances so Face ID recognizes you in different situations.

- Your iPhone must have Face ID already set up and working without a mask first
- Face ID with Mask works best with medical and cloth masks — it does not support face coverings that block both the eyes and the nose

📋 Difficulty & Time
🔧 Diagnose & Fix Charging Issues: Step by Step
Step 1: Try a Different Cable AND Adapter
Cables fail more often than ports. Borrow a known-good cable from a friend, or grab a spare. Use a different wall adapter too — counterfeit chargers are a common silent killer.
Step 2: Inspect the Charging Port with a Flashlight
Hold the device under a bright light and look directly into the port. You're looking for:
- Gray pocket lint compressed against the back wall (most common)
- Bent or recessed pins (drop damage)
- Green corrosion on the contacts (liquid damage)
- Stuck-on residue from sticky drinks
Step 3: Clean the Port with a Plastic Pick
Power the device OFF first — this prevents short-circuits while you work. Then:
- Insert a plastic precision pick at a slight downward angle
- Work toward the back wall, then drag forward to pull lint OUT (never push deeper)
- Repeat from different angles — port lint is layered
- NEVER use metal — paperclips, needles, or pins will short the contacts
Step 4: Brush + Compressed Air
After picking visible debris, sweep the port with a soft anti-static brush, then short bursts (1 sec) of compressed air from 6 inches away. Keep the can upright to avoid propellant spray.
Step 5: Try Wireless Charging
If the device supports MagSafe/Qi: try wireless charging. If wireless works but wired doesn't, the port is dead — you need replacement (see escalation below). If wireless ALSO doesn't work, the issue is likely the battery or charging IC.
Step 6: Force Restart
Sometimes iOS/iPadOS gets stuck in a charging-block state. Force restart resets the power management chip:
- iPhone 8 and later: press Vol Up, then Vol Down, then hold Side until Apple logo
- iPad with no Home button: same as iPhone 8+
- iPad with Home button: hold Top + Home until Apple logo
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Pushing lint deeper instead of pulling it out
- Using metal tools (instant short risk)
- Skipping the cable test — cables fail more than ports
- Cleaning while the device is powered on
🏥 When to Call a Pro
If the port has bent pins, visible corrosion, or the contacts feel loose, you need a replacement (Apple: $129, third-party: $79–$99, AppleCare+: $99). Skip DIY for this — bent contacts can damage the logic board.
🔧 Method 1: Enable Face ID with a Mask
This is the native solution and the most reliable. It uses the unique geometry around your eyes to authenticate you.
- Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode and enter your passcode
- Toggle on Face ID with a Mask
- Tap Use Face ID with a Mask to confirm
- Follow the on-screen instructions to scan your face — you will do two circular head rotations, same as the original Face ID setup
- When complete, Face ID will now work whether you are wearing a mask or not
Important: This feature focuses on the eye area. Sunglasses that block infrared light (most polarized lenses) will prevent Face ID from working even with this enabled.
Add Glasses for Better Recognition
- After enabling Face ID with a Mask, tap Add Glasses
- Put on a pair of glasses you wear frequently and scan your face again
- Repeat for up to 4 different pairs of glasses
- Each scan improves accuracy when wearing that specific pair with a mask
⌚ Method 2: Unlock with Apple Watch
If you own an Apple Watch, you can use it as a secondary unlock method. This works even on iPhone X and 11 models that do not support Face ID with Mask.
- Make sure your Apple Watch is on your wrist, unlocked, and protected with a passcode
- On your iPhone, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode
- Scroll down to Unlock with Apple Watch
- Toggle on the switch next to your Apple Watch name
- Now when Face ID detects a mask, it will check whether your Apple Watch is nearby, unlocked, and on your wrist — if so, your iPhone unlocks and the Watch gives a haptic tap confirmation
Limitation: Apple Watch unlock only works for unlocking your iPhone. It does not work for Apple Pay, App Store purchases, or password autofill — those still require full Face ID or your passcode.
👤 Method 3: Add an Alternative Appearance
Alternative Appearance lets Face ID learn a second look — useful if you regularly look very different (e.g., with and without heavy makeup, facial hair, or head coverings).
- Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode
- Tap Set Up an Alternative Appearance
- Scan your face with the different look you want Face ID to recognize
- Complete the two-rotation scan process
You can only have one alternative appearance at a time. If you need to replace it, you must reset Face ID entirely and re-enroll both appearances.
🛠️ Troubleshooting: Face ID Still Not Working
If Face ID fails even after enabling mask support, try these fixes in order:
- Clean the TrueDepth camera: Wipe the notch/Dynamic Island area with a microfiber cloth. Dirt, screen protectors, or cases that partially cover the sensors are the #1 cause of failures
- Check for obstructions: Make sure your mask does not cover your eyes or ride too high on the nose bridge. Face ID needs to see the area around both eyes
- Update iOS: Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Apple frequently improves Face ID algorithms in iOS updates
- Restart your iPhone: Hold the side button + volume button, slide to power off, then power back on
- Reset Face ID: Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Reset Face ID, then set it up again from scratch including the mask option
- Reset All Settings: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings (this does not erase data but resets all preferences)
- Check for hardware damage: If Face ID says "Face ID is not available" or "Unable to activate Face ID," the TrueDepth camera may be physically damaged from a drop or screen repair
- Attention Awareness: If you wear sunglasses frequently, try disabling Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Require Attention for Face ID — this lets Face ID work even when it cannot see your eyes clearly, though it is slightly less secure
🆘 Need Professional Help?
If Face ID says it is unavailable or not working after a screen repair or drop, the TrueDepth camera hardware may need professional diagnosis.
