How to Trigger Emergency SOS

Three ways to trigger:

  1. Hold Side + Volume button for 5 seconds. The SOS slider appears. Slide to call.
  2. Press Side button 5x rapidly (legacy method, still works on iPhone 8+).
  3. Apple Watch Crown — hold for 5 seconds. Same flow.

Once triggered, iPhone calls 911, texts your designated emergency contacts your location, and continues to share location for 24 hours.

Satellite SOS — iPhone 14+ Lifesaver

Lost in the woods with no cellular? iPhone 14 and later support Emergency SOS via Satellite. Try to call 911 normally — if it fails, iPhone offers 'Emergency Text via Satellite'. Walk through pointing the phone at a satellite, type your emergency to relay center, who dispatches local services. Free until at least 2025. Available in US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Ireland, Australia, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Austria, Japan.

Crash Detection — Sometimes Too Sensitive

iPhone 14+ and Apple Watch Series 8+ have Crash Detection that auto-triggers Emergency SOS in severe crashes. Mostly works well but false positives happen on roller coasters, ski falls, and dropped phones. If false trigger: tap Cancel during the 10-second countdown. If you miss it, answer the 911 call and tell them it was accidental — don't hang up silently or they'll send EMS regardless.

Set Up Emergency Contacts

Your emergency contacts get auto-notified with your location when SOS triggers:

  1. Open Health app → tap your profile photo → Medical ID
  2. Tap Edit
  3. Add Emergency Contacts
  4. Save

These contacts also get bypassed by Do Not Disturb when they call you.

Disable Accidental Triggers

Settings → Emergency SOS → toggle off 'Call with Hold and Release' and 'Call with 5 Button Presses' if you keep accidentally triggering. Crash Detection should stay on.
