Quick Diagnostic — Try In Order

  1. Toggle Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, on. Settings → Bluetooth. Solves 30% of cases.
  2. Forget the device, re-pair. Settings → Bluetooth → tap (i) next to the device → Forget This Device. Re-pair fresh.
  3. Restart iPhone. Hold side + volume up → off → on. Resets Bluetooth firmware state.
  4. Test with a different device. Try AirPods on another iPhone — if they work there, your iPhone has the issue. If they fail there too, the AirPods are the issue.
  5. Reset Network Settings. Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Reset → Reset Network Settings. Clears all stuck network/Bluetooth state. You'll lose Wi-Fi passwords (re-enter them after).

AirPods-Specific Fixes

If your AirPods are the problem (not iPhone):

  1. Place both AirPods in case with lid open
  2. Hold the setup button on the back of the case for 15 seconds — light flashes amber, then white
  3. Re-pair with iPhone (case open near phone)

This factory-resets the AirPods themselves and is the #1 fix for connection issues.

Car Bluetooth-Specific Fixes

If your car won't pair:

  • On iPhone: Settings → Bluetooth → forget the car
  • On the car: delete the iPhone from the car's paired-devices list (find this in your car's Bluetooth settings menu)
  • Re-pair fresh from both sides
  • Some cars require ignition cycling between attempts (off → on → try)

When It's Hardware

Bluetooth chip hardware failures are RARE. They typically follow:

  • Liquid damage (corrosion on the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip — same chip handles both)
  • Severe drop damage
  • iPhone won't connect to ANY Bluetooth device, even after factory reset

Apple's Bluetooth chip repair runs $300–$500. Usually it's cheaper to upgrade the phone — Apple often quotes phone replacement for these issues.
