Why iPhone 15+ Back Glass Got Cheap

From the iPhone 8 through the iPhone 14, Apple fused the back glass directly to the aluminum/titanium chassis. Replacing it required removing every internal component — battery, logic board, MagSafe coil, all of it — to access the glass from the inside. That's why those repairs cost $379–$549 even though the glass itself is $30 wholesale.

For the iPhone 15, Apple redesigned the chassis. The back glass is now removable from the outside without disturbing the internals. This was driven partly by the EU Right to Repair regulations, partly by Apple's own carbon-reduction goals (one repair vs full housing swap = less waste). Repair time dropped from 90 minutes to 15 minutes, and the price dropped to $169.

AppleCare+ Math for Back Glass

Through 2025, AppleCare+ glass-only damage was a separate $99 incident. In 2026 Apple unified it: any glass damage (front or back) is $29 with AppleCare+. So if you have AC+ and the back is cracked, just pay the $29 and stop reading.

Should iPhone 13/14 Owners Even Repair?

The iPhone 13 launched at $799 four years ago. Today its used resale value is $200–$280. A $549 back-glass repair costs more than the phone's resale value. Don't pay Apple's price unless you have AppleCare+. Options:

  • Live with the crack (a clear case usually hides it)
  • Trade in for $200–$280 even with cracked back
  • Third-party laser-removal for $199–$249 if cosmetic perfection matters

For iPhone 15/16 owners, the math is different — $169 to fix a 1–2 year old phone is reasonable.
