Quick Fixes — Try These First
- Toggle Bluetooth + WiFi off, then on. Both devices. AirDrop uses both — toggling refreshes connection.
- Set AirDrop visibility to 'Everyone for 10 minutes'. Settings → General → AirDrop → 'Everyone for 10 minutes'. Sometimes 'Contacts Only' fails to find people in your contacts.
- Bring devices closer. AirDrop range is ~30 feet. If sender and receiver are in different rooms, move closer.
- Restart both devices. Force restart resets Bluetooth/WiFi state.
Settings That Block AirDrop
- Personal Hotspot ON blocks AirDrop on iPhone. Toggle off temporarily.
- Restrictions enabled can block AirDrop. Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy → Allowed Apps → AirDrop must be on.
- Bluetooth turned off kills AirDrop entirely.
- WiFi turned off kills AirDrop. (AirDrop uses both Bluetooth for discovery + WiFi for fast transfer.)
- Airplane Mode on blocks both Bluetooth AND WiFi by default.
Mac-Specific AirDrop Issues
- On Mac, open Finder → Go menu → AirDrop (or use Cmd+Shift+R)
- Set 'Allow me to be discovered by' to Everyone (not Contacts Only)
- Make sure both Mac WiFi and Bluetooth are on
- If iPhone shows up but Mac doesn't accept — check System Preferences → Sharing → AirDrop is enabled
NameDrop (iPhone 15+) — Different Issue
NameDrop (touch iPhones together to share contacts) is a separate AirDrop feature. If it doesn't work:
- Settings → General → AirDrop → 'Bringing Devices Together' must be on
- Both iPhones must have the feature enabled
- iPhone 15 and later only — won't work on older models
- Hold tops together for 1+ second
