🔈 Fix 1: Check the Mute Switch (Older iPads)
Older iPad models (iPad 2 through iPad Air 1st gen, and iPad mini 1-3) have a physical side switch above the volume buttons. This switch can either mute the device or lock screen rotation, depending on your settings.
- Look at the side of your iPad for a small toggle switch above the volume buttons
- If you see an orange dot, the switch is in the mute position -- flip it the other way
- To check what the switch controls: go to Settings > General and look for "Use Side Switch to" (available on models with this switch)
Note: Newer iPads (2014 and later) removed the side switch entirely. If your iPad does not have one, skip to Fix 2.
🔊 Fix 2: Check the Volume
It sounds obvious, but iPadOS has multiple volume controls that can independently silence your device.
- Press the Volume Up button on the side of your iPad -- you should see a volume indicator on screen
- Open Control Center (swipe down from the top-right corner) and drag the volume slider all the way up
- Go to Settings > Sounds and make sure the Ringer and Alerts slider is turned up
- Important: media volume and ringer volume are separate. Playing a YouTube video uses media volume, while notification sounds use ringer volume
🌙 Fix 3: Disable Do Not Disturb / Focus Mode
Do Not Disturb and Focus modes silence notifications, alarms, and sometimes app audio.
- Open Control Center (swipe down from top-right)
- Look for the crescent moon icon or Focus button
- If it is highlighted/active, tap it to turn it off
- Also check Settings > Focus to see if any scheduled Focus modes are running
Common trap: Some Focus modes are set to activate automatically at certain times or locations. Check the automation settings.
📡 Fix 4: Check Bluetooth Audio Routing
Your iPad may be sending audio to a Bluetooth device you forgot about -- headphones left in a case, a speaker in another room, or a car stereo.
- Open Control Center and long-press the audio card (top-right music controls)
- Tap the AirPlay icon (triangle with circles) and check where audio is being routed
- Select "iPad" to route sound back to the built-in speakers
- Alternatively, go to Settings > Bluetooth and disconnect any connected audio devices
Tip: If you recently used AirPods or a Bluetooth speaker, they may have auto-connected. Turning Bluetooth off temporarily is the fastest test.
🧹 Fix 5: Clean the Speakers
Dust, lint, and debris can block your iPad's speaker grilles and significantly reduce volume or muffle sound.
- Locate the speaker grilles -- they are on the bottom edge (or both top and bottom on iPad Pro models)
- Use a soft-bristled brush (a clean toothbrush works well) to gently sweep across the speaker openings
- Use compressed air in short bursts at a slight angle -- never blow directly into the speaker at full pressure
- Avoid using sharp objects like pins or toothpicks, which can puncture the speaker mesh
- If your iPad has a case, remove it and test the sound -- some cases block the speakers
🔄 Fix 6: Restart Your iPad
A restart clears audio routing glitches, frozen audio processes, and temporary software bugs.
- Face ID iPads: Press and hold the Top button and either Volume button. Slide to power off. Wait 30 seconds, then press Top to restart
- Home Button iPads: Press and hold the Top button. Slide to power off. Wait 30 seconds, then restart
After restarting, test with a built-in app like Music or Clock > Timer > When Timer Ends (set a sound) to verify the speakers work with a system-level audio source.
🎧 Fix 7: Check App-Specific Volume Settings
Many apps have their own independent volume controls:
- YouTube: Has its own volume slider within the video player -- make sure it is not muted
- Games: Most games have in-app audio settings under their settings/options menu
- Zoom / FaceTime: Check in-call audio settings and make sure speaker is selected
- Safari: Some websites auto-mute video. Look for a speaker icon in the video player or the Safari address bar
If sound works in some apps but not others, the issue is app-specific, not your iPad's hardware.
⚙️ Fix 8: Reset All Settings
If nothing else works, resetting all settings fixes deep audio configuration issues without erasing your data.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad
- Tap Reset > Reset All Settings
- Enter your passcode
- This resets Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, display settings, and audio settings to factory defaults
- Your apps, photos, and data are not erased -- only preferences are reset
🔧 When It Is a Hardware Problem
If you have tried all 8 fixes and still have no sound, the issue is likely hardware:
- Blown speaker: If sound is distorted, crackling, or coming from only one side on a stereo iPad, a speaker may be damaged
- Water damage: Even minor moisture exposure can corrode speaker connections
- Headphone jack ghost: On older iPads with a headphone jack, debris inside the port can trick the iPad into thinking headphones are plugged in
- Logic board issue: If both speakers failed simultaneously, the audio IC chip on the logic board may be faulty
