📋 Why Did My iPad Keyboard Disappear?
The number one reason: your iPad thinks an external keyboard is connected. iPadOS automatically hides the on-screen keyboard when it detects a Bluetooth keyboard, Smart Keyboard Folio, or Magic Keyboard. Other causes include:
- The keyboard accidentally entered floating mode (shrunken and repositioned)
- A software glitch after an iPadOS update
- The keyboard was split (older iPad models with split keyboard support)
- A third-party keyboard app crashed or was uninstalled
- The text field you tapped does not support keyboard input
🔧 Fix 1: Disconnect External Keyboards
This fixes the problem for the vast majority of users.
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth
- Check if any keyboard is listed under "My Devices" as "Connected"
- Tap the (i) icon next to the keyboard and choose Disconnect
- If you use a Smart Keyboard Folio or Magic Keyboard, physically detach it from your iPad
- Tap into any text field -- the on-screen keyboard should now appear
Quick tip: Even with an external keyboard connected, you can bring up the on-screen keyboard by tapping the small keyboard icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen (if available), or by pressing the down-arrow key on the external keyboard.
🔧 Fix 2: Fix the Floating Keyboard
If your keyboard has shrunk to a tiny iPhone-sized keyboard floating in the middle of the screen, you have accidentally enabled floating keyboard mode.
- Method 1: Place two fingers on the small keyboard and pinch outward (spread apart) -- this expands it back to full size
- Method 2: Tap and hold the keyboard icon at the bottom-right of the floating keyboard, then drag it down to the bottom of the screen and select Dock
- Method 3: Tap and hold the keyboard icon and select Dock and Merge to return to the default full-width layout
🔧 Fix 3: Reset Keyboard Dictionary
Corrupted keyboard data can cause the keyboard to misbehave or fail to appear.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad
- Tap Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary
- Enter your passcode when prompted
- This clears all custom words you have taught your iPad but does not erase any other data
🔧 Fix 4: Restart Your iPad
A restart clears temporary glitches that prevent the keyboard from loading.
- Face ID iPads: Press and hold the Top button and either Volume button until "slide to power off" appears. Slide, wait 30 seconds, then press the Top button to restart
- Home Button iPads: Press and hold the Top button until the slider appears. Slide, wait, then press Top to restart
🔧 Fix 5: Check Third-Party Keyboard Apps
If you installed a third-party keyboard (like Gboard or SwiftKey) and it disappeared:
- Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards
- Make sure the third-party keyboard is still listed. If not, tap Add New Keyboard and re-add it
- Ensure "Allow Full Access" is enabled for the keyboard (required for most third-party keyboards)
- If problems persist, delete the third-party keyboard from the list and re-add the default English keyboard
🔧 Fix 6: Troubleshoot Bluetooth Keyboards
If your external Bluetooth keyboard is not typing or connecting:
- Check battery: Make sure the keyboard is charged or has fresh batteries
- Toggle Bluetooth: Turn Bluetooth off and on in Settings (not just Control Center)
- Forget and re-pair: Go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap (i) next to the keyboard, and choose Forget This Device. Then put the keyboard in pairing mode and reconnect
- Check distance: Stay within 30 feet of your iPad. Walls and other devices can interfere
- Reset network settings: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Network Settings (this also resets Wi-Fi passwords)
🔧 Fix 7: Smart Keyboard / Magic Keyboard Not Working
Apple's Smart Connector keyboards (Smart Keyboard Folio, Magic Keyboard) connect magnetically without Bluetooth. If they stop working:
- Clean the Smart Connector: Use a dry, lint-free cloth to wipe the 3 small dots on the back/side of your iPad and the matching pins on the keyboard
- Remove and reattach: Detach the keyboard completely, wait 10 seconds, and reattach firmly
- Check compatibility: Not all Magic Keyboards fit all iPads. Verify your iPad model is supported
- Update iPadOS: Apple occasionally pushes fixes for keyboard compatibility in software updates
- Try another app: Open Notes and test typing -- if it works there but not in another app, the issue is app-specific
🔄 Fix 8: Update iPadOS
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update
- If an update is available, tap Download and Install
- Keyboard bugs are frequently patched in point releases -- this is especially important after a major iPadOS upgrade
