iPad Running Slow? Speed It Up in 10 Minutes

iPads slow down over time — bloated storage, outdated software, and background processes all take their toll. The good news is that most performance issues can be fixed in under 10 minutes without losing any data. Work through these fixes in order from quickest to most involved.

🔧 Fix 1: Restart Your iPad

It sounds basic, but a restart clears out temporary memory, stops runaway processes, and resets system caches. If you have not restarted your iPad in weeks, this alone can make a noticeable difference.

  • Face ID iPads: Hold the Top button + either Volume button until the power slider appears. Slide to power off, wait 30 seconds, then hold Top to turn back on.
  • Home button iPads: Hold the Top button until the slider appears. Power off, wait, then restart.

🔧 Fix 2: Close Resource-Heavy Apps

Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the center to open the App Switcher. Swipe away apps you are not using — especially games, video editors, and browsers with many tabs. While iPadOS manages memory automatically, apps with active processes (GPS, audio, downloads) will compete for resources in the background.

🔧 Fix 3: Free Up Storage Space

When an iPad is nearly full, the system cannot create swap files or cache data efficiently, and everything slows to a crawl. Go to Settings → General → iPad Storage and check your usage.

  • Offload Unused Apps: Enable "Offload Unused Apps" to automatically remove apps you rarely use while keeping their data.
  • Delete old videos and photos: Videos are the biggest space hogs. Move them to iCloud or a computer.
  • Clear message attachments: In iPad Storage, tap Messages to see and delete large attachments.
  • Delete and reinstall bloated apps: Some apps accumulate gigabytes of cache. Deleting and reinstalling resets them.

Target: Keep at least 5–10 GB free for smooth performance.

🔧 Fix 4: Update iPadOS

Apple regularly ships performance optimizations in iPadOS updates. Go to Settings → General → Software Update. If you are several versions behind, updating can dramatically improve speed — especially on older hardware where Apple has optimized the OS for aging chips.

Note for very old iPads: If your iPad no longer receives updates (iPad Air 2 and earlier), it may be too old for modern apps. Consider whether a newer model makes more sense than fighting the hardware limits.

🔧 Fix 5: Disable Background App Refresh

Background App Refresh lets apps update their content in the background, which eats CPU, RAM, and battery. Go to Settings → General → Background App Refresh and turn it off entirely, or selectively disable it for apps that do not need real-time updates (games, photo editors, shopping apps).

🔧 Fix 6: Reduce Visual Effects

Transparency effects and animations look nice but cost GPU cycles on older iPads. Disabling them gives a snappier feel:

  • Settings → Accessibility → Motion → Reduce Motion: ON
  • Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Reduce Transparency: ON

This is especially effective on iPads with A10 chips or older (iPad 7th gen, iPad Air 3).

🔧 Fix 7: Clear Safari Data

Safari accumulates website data, cookies, and cache that can slow browsing significantly. Go to Settings → Safari → Clear History and Website Data. You will be signed out of websites, but browsing should be noticeably faster. If you use Chrome or another browser, clear its cache in the app settings as well.

🔧 Fix 8: Check Battery Health

iPadOS 16.1+ added Battery Health monitoring for iPads. Go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health. If Maximum Capacity is below 80%, the system may be throttling performance to prevent unexpected shutdowns. A battery replacement restores full performance and costs far less than a new iPad.

🔧 Fix 9: Reset All Settings

If individual fixes have not helped, corrupted preferences may be the cause. Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPad → Reset All Settings. This resets Wi-Fi networks, display settings, notifications, and all preferences to defaults. Your apps and data remain intact — you just need to reconnect to Wi-Fi and reconfigure preferences.

🔧 Fix 10: Factory Reset (Last Resort)

If nothing else works, a full erase gives you a clean slate. Back up to iCloud or a computer first.

  1. Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPad → Erase All Content and Settings
  2. Set up the iPad as new (do not restore from backup) to get maximum performance
  3. Manually reinstall only the apps you actually use

Setting up as new rather than restoring from backup avoids carrying over the accumulated cruft that caused the slowdown in the first place.

🆘 Still Slow? It Might Be Hardware

If your iPad is still sluggish after a factory reset, the issue may be a failing storage chip, degraded battery, or the device is simply too old for current software demands. A professional can diagnose whether a battery replacement will help or if it is time for an upgrade.
