βοΈ Which Apple Pencil Do You Have?
- Apple Pencil (1st generation): Round, glossy, Lightning connector under the cap. Charges by plugging into iPad Lightning port or Lightning adapter.
- Apple Pencil (2nd generation): Flat edge, matte finish, no cap. Charges and pairs magnetically on the side of the iPad.
- Apple Pencil (USB-C): Round like 1st gen but has a sliding USB-C port under a cap. No pressure sensitivity. Budget model.
- Apple Pencil Pro: Looks like 2nd gen but adds barrel roll, squeeze gesture, and haptic feedback. Pairs and charges magnetically.
π Compatibility Chart
Not every Pencil works with every iPad. Using an incompatible combination is a common cause of "not working."
- Apple Pencil 1st gen: iPad (6thβ10th gen), iPad Air (3rd gen), iPad mini (5th gen), iPad Pro 9.7"/10.5"/12.9" (1st & 2nd gen)
- Apple Pencil 2nd gen: iPad Pro 11" (all gens), iPad Pro 12.9" (3rd gen+), iPad Air (4th & 5th gen), iPad mini (6th gen)
- Apple Pencil USB-C: All iPads with USB-C (iPad 10th gen, iPad Air 4th gen+, iPad mini 6th gen+, all 2018+ iPad Pros)
- Apple Pencil Pro: iPad Pro M4 (2024+), iPad Air M2 (2024+), iPad Air M3 (2025+), iPad mini A17 Pro (2024+)
If your Pencil and iPad are not compatible, no amount of troubleshooting will make them work together.
π§ Fix 1: Charge Your Apple Pencil
A dead Pencil will not pair or respond. Charge it for at least 15 minutes before testing.
- 1st gen: Remove the cap and plug the Lightning connector into your iPad's Lightning port. Or use the included Lightning-to-Lightning adapter with a cable.
- 2nd gen / Pro: Attach magnetically to the flat side of your iPad. Make sure it snaps into position β you should feel a click and see a charge notification.
- USB-C: Slide open the cap and connect a USB-C cable.
Check the charge level in Settings → Apple Pencil (it only appears when paired) or add the Batteries widget to your home screen.
π§ Fix 2: Re-pair the Apple Pencil
If the Pencil has charge but will not respond, unpair and re-pair it:
- Go to Settings → Bluetooth
- Find "Apple Pencil" in the device list and tap the info (i) icon
- Tap Forget This Device
- Now pair again:
- 1st gen: Plug the Lightning connector into the iPad
- 2nd gen / Pro: Attach to the magnetic side of the iPad
- USB-C: Connect via USB-C cable to the iPad
- A pairing prompt should appear β tap Pair
π§ Fix 3: Restart Your iPad
Bluetooth glitches are the most common software cause of Pencil failures. Restart your iPad to clear the Bluetooth stack:
- Face ID iPads: Hold Top + Volume button until slider appears. Slide off, wait 30 seconds, power on.
- Home button iPads: Hold Top button until slider appears. Slide off, wait, power on.
After the restart, try using the Pencil immediately β do not open Bluetooth settings first, just touch the Pencil to the screen.
π§ Fix 4: Check Bluetooth Settings
Go to Settings → Bluetooth and make sure it is turned ON. The Apple Pencil should appear in the "My Devices" list as "Connected." If it shows "Not Connected," tap on it to reconnect. If it does not appear at all, re-pair using Fix 2 above.
π§ Fix 5: Replace the Pencil Tip
The Pencil tip wears down with use. A worn or damaged tip can cause missed strokes, loss of pressure sensitivity, and scratchy input. Unscrew the tip by twisting it counterclockwise and replace it with a new one. Apple sells replacement tips in packs β the same tips work on all Apple Pencil models.
If you draw heavily, tips can wear out in just a few months. Paper-feel screen protectors accelerate tip wear significantly.
π§ Fix 6: Check iPadOS and Pencil Settings
Go to Settings → Apple Pencil and review these options:
- Scribble: If disabled, the Pencil will not convert handwriting to text in text fields. Enable it if expected.
- Double Tap (2nd gen): Make sure it is set to your preferred action (switch tool, eraser, etc.).
- Squeeze (Pro only): Verify the squeeze gesture is configured.
- Only Draw with Apple Pencil: If enabled, finger input is ignored in drawing apps β which is usually what you want but can be confusing.
π§ Fix 7: Reset Network Settings
Because the Pencil communicates over Bluetooth, corrupted network settings can prevent it from connecting. Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPad → Reset → Reset Network Settings. This also resets Wi-Fi passwords, so have those handy. After the reset, re-pair the Pencil.
π§ Fix 8: Test in a Different App
Some third-party apps have Pencil-specific bugs. Open Apple Notes, create a new note, and try drawing. If the Pencil works in Notes but not in another app, the problem is with that app β check for app updates or contact the developer. If it does not work in Notes either, the issue is system-level.
π§ Fix 9: Update iPadOS
Apple has fixed Pencil pairing and input bugs in multiple iPadOS updates. Go to Settings → General → Software Update and install any available updates. This is especially important after buying a new Pencil model β older iPadOS versions may not fully support newer Pencils.
π Fix 10: When Nothing Works
If you have tried every fix and the Pencil still does not work:
- Pencil battery may be dead: Apple Pencil batteries are not replaceable. After 2β3 years of heavy use, the internal battery may no longer hold a charge. Apple offers a replacement (essentially a new Pencil at a reduced price).
- iPad digitizer issue: If the Pencil works on another iPad but not yours, the Pencil digitizer layer in your iPad's display may be damaged. This requires professional repair.
- Try a different Pencil: If you can borrow one, test a known-working Pencil on your iPad to isolate the problem.
