iPad Multitasking & Stage Manager Guide 2026

iPad multitasking has gotten powerful. Stage Manager (iPadOS 16+) lets you arrange windows like macOS. Split View and Slide Over still exist for simpler layouts. Here's how to use all of them.

Split View — Two Apps Side-by-Side

Quickest multitasking:

  1. Open the first app (e.g., Safari)
  2. Drag the second app from the Dock toward the right edge of the screen
  3. Release — second app docks alongside
  4. Adjust the divider to resize each app

Best for: writing in one app while researching in another. Very simple, no learning curve.

Slide Over — Floating App

  1. While in any app, drag a second app from the Dock to the middle of the screen
  2. The second app appears as a small floating window
  3. Slide the floating window to the edge to hide; pull from edge to bring back

Best for: quick reference apps (Calculator, Messages). Always available without taking permanent screen space.

Stage Manager — Pro Multitasking

Stage Manager (iPadOS 16+, iPad Pro M1+ and Air M1+) is the most powerful mode:

  1. Settings → Home Screen & Multitasking → enable Stage Manager
  2. Or: Control Center → tap Stage Manager icon
  3. Apps now have resizable windows like macOS
  4. The current 'stage' (group of apps) is in the center
  5. Recent stages are stacked on the left
  6. Tap a stage to switch; drag windows between stages

Best for: complex workflows where you have 3+ apps active simultaneously.

External Monitor + Stage Manager

Connect a USB-C monitor to iPad Pro M4 / Air M3 / mini 7. With Stage Manager enabled, the monitor extends as a second screen:

  • iPad screen + monitor screen = up to 8 windows total (4 on each)
  • Drag windows between screens with finger or trackpad
  • Use a Bluetooth keyboard + trackpad for desktop-class workflow

This essentially turns iPad into a portable Mac mini. Workflow that used to require a MacBook now works on iPad Pro M4 + monitor + keyboard.

Multitasking Tips

  • Keyboard shortcuts: Cmd+Tab switches apps (like Mac). Cmd+Space opens Spotlight.
  • Three-finger gesture: swipe up with 3 fingers = app switcher. Pinch in with 5 fingers = home screen.
  • Apple Pencil shortcut: Pencil hover preview shows window labels.
  • Quick Note: Drag from bottom-right corner with Pencil to start a note over any app.
