Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro+ Only)

Apple's AI features. Requires iPhone 15 Pro or 16/16 Pro/Max. Older iPhones don't run it. What it does:

  • Writing Tools: Rewrite, summarize, proofread any text in any app
  • Image Generation: Create images via text descriptions
  • Genmoji: Custom emojis on demand
  • Smarter Siri: Multi-step requests, better understanding context
  • Photo Cleanup: Remove people/objects from photos with AI

If you have a supported iPhone, enable in Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → Apple Intelligence.

RCS Messaging — Better Android Texting

Texts to Android users always show as green bubbles, but iOS 18 added RCS support. Now those green messages have:

  • Typing indicators
  • Read receipts
  • Higher-quality photos and videos
  • Group chat features (similar to iMessage groups)

RCS works automatically — no setting to enable. Carrier dependent (most major US carriers support).

Customizable Home Screen

Long-press home screen → Edit Home Screen. New options:

  • Tint app icons (color overlay)
  • Larger icons (no labels)
  • Free-form layout — leave gaps between icons
  • Choose where the dock sits

For users who've envied Android's customization for years, this is iOS finally catching up.

Photos App Redesign

Apple completely redesigned Photos in iOS 18. New layout:

  • Single feed at top with chronological photos
  • Smart collections below: People & Pets, Memories, Trips
  • Search bar at top
  • No more 'Albums' / 'For You' / 'Library' tabs

Reception has been mixed. Many users found the previous layout cleaner. There's no toggle to revert — you adapt.

Lock Screen & Control Center Updates

Lock Screen — long-press to customize the two corner controls (Flashlight, Camera by default). Replace with: Voice Memo, Wallet, Translate, Shortcut, anything.

Control Center — completely redesigned. Multi-page (swipe between pages). Custom layouts. Add 100+ controls. Extends to third-party apps in some cases.

What to Skip in iOS 18

  • Apple Intelligence on iPhone 15 (non-Pro): Doesn't run. Skip.
  • Photos redesign: Polarizing. If you find your way around, fine. If not, complaint to Apple.
  • Math Notes: Cool feature but niche use case. Try it once, skip if you don't need it.
