How to Unlock iPhone When You Forgot Passcode (2026 Guide)

Forgot your iPhone passcode? Bad news first: you'll likely lose your data unless you have a backup. Apple's security model deliberately prevents passcode bypass — that's a feature, not a bug. Here's the recovery procedure.

First — Verify You're Locked Out

iPhone might show 'iPhone is disabled, try again in X minutes/hours' or 'iPhone Unavailable'. After 10 failed attempts, iOS may auto-erase if you set that option. Otherwise, the lock progresses:

  • 5 wrong attempts: 1-min delay
  • 7 wrong attempts: 5-min delay
  • 9 wrong attempts: 15-min delay
  • 10 wrong attempts: 60-min delay
  • 11+: iPhone locked permanently or auto-erased

If you see 'iPhone Unavailable' or 'Erase iPhone' button, you're locked out.

Method 1: Erase iPhone via Lock Screen (iOS 15.2+)

Easiest if available:

  1. On lock screen, after 7+ failed attempts, tap 'Erase iPhone' option in bottom-right
  2. Sign in with Apple ID password
  3. Confirm erase
  4. iPhone wipes itself
  5. Set up as new or restore from backup

This requires you remember your Apple ID password (different from passcode). If you forgot both, see Method 3.

Method 2: Recovery Mode (Mac/PC)

  1. Connect iPhone to computer via cable
  2. Force iPhone into Recovery Mode:
    • iPhone 8+: Vol Up → Vol Down → hold Side until recovery-mode screen
    • iPhone 7: Hold Vol Down + Side
    • iPhone 6s and earlier: Hold Home + Side
  3. On computer, popup appears — choose Restore
  4. iPhone wipes and reinstalls latest iOS
  5. Set up as new or restore from backup

Method 3: Apple Account Recovery (Forgot Apple ID Too)

If you forgot both passcode AND Apple ID password:

  1. Visit iforgot.apple.com
  2. Enter your Apple ID email
  3. Tap 'Reset Password'
  4. Apple sends recovery code to your verified phone or email
  5. If those are inaccessible, request 'Account Recovery' — Apple verifies your identity over days/weeks

Account Recovery takes 1-2 weeks intentionally — slow to prevent thieves from rushing through. With original purchase receipt, the process is faster.

After Unlock — Restore Your Data

If iPhone was wiped during unlock:

  1. At the Setup screen, choose 'Restore from iCloud Backup' (or Mac/PC)
  2. Sign in with Apple ID
  3. Pick the most recent backup before the lockout
  4. Wait — restore takes 30 min to several hours

If you didn't have backup: data is gone. Photos, contacts, messages, app data — all lost. This is why backing up matters.

How to Avoid This Next Time

  • Always have iCloud Backup ON (Settings → [Name] → iCloud → Backup → On)
  • Use Apple Passwords app to remember Apple ID password
  • Set a passcode you'll remember (don't use random — use a memorable phrase)
  • Add 2FA for Apple ID to your Apple Watch (Watch can approve sign-ins)
  • Memorize your Apple ID separately from passcode
