Method 1: Quick Start (Recommended)

Easiest method if you have both phones. Apple's Quick Start uses Bluetooth + Wi-Fi (or a cable for fastest) to transfer everything directly — apps, photos, settings, even Wi-Fi passwords.

  1. Both phones must be on iOS 12.4 or later (basically all modern iPhones)
  2. Power on the new iPhone next to the old one
  3. The old iPhone shows a 'Set Up New iPhone' prompt — tap Continue
  4. Hold the old iPhone's camera over the cloud-shaped pattern on the new iPhone
  5. Choose 'Transfer from iPhone' (direct) or 'Download from iCloud' (no cable needed)
  6. Cable transfer is fastest (45 min for 100GB)
  7. Wi-Fi transfer works but is slower (1.5–2 hr for 100GB)

Method 2: iCloud Restore

Use this if you don't have access to your old iPhone (lost, broken, sold).

  1. On old iPhone (if available): back up to iCloud (Settings → [Name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now)
  2. Boot new iPhone
  3. At setup, choose 'Restore from iCloud Backup'
  4. Sign in with your Apple ID
  5. Pick the most recent backup
  6. Wait — restore takes 30 min to several hours depending on data size

Apps download in the background after initial setup completes. You can use the phone immediately while apps continue installing.

Method 3: Mac Backup + Restore (Fastest)

If you want maximum speed and you already have a Mac:

  1. Connect old iPhone to Mac via cable
  2. Open Finder → click your iPhone in sidebar
  3. Click 'Back Up Now' (encrypt for password preservation)
  4. Disconnect old iPhone
  5. Connect new iPhone to same Mac
  6. Finder offers 'Restore Backup' — pick the one you just made

10–20 min total. Fastest method if you have a Mac.

Method 4: Move to iOS (From Android)

Coming from Samsung, Pixel, or any Android?

  1. On the new iPhone, at setup, choose 'Move Data from Android'
  2. On Android, install 'Move to iOS' app from Play Store
  3. Both phones display a code — enter it on Android
  4. Choose what to transfer: contacts, messages, photos, accounts, calendars, free apps
  5. Wait — typically 30–60 min

What transfers: contacts, messages, photos, videos, calendars, mail accounts, free apps available on both stores. What DOESN'T transfer: paid apps (you'll re-buy in App Store), passwords (use Google Password Manager → import to iCloud separately), Android-only apps.

After Transfer Checklist

  1. Sign into Apple ID on the new phone
  2. Re-pair Bluetooth devices (AirPods, Watch, car)
  3. Verify iMessage and FaceTime activated (Settings → Messages)
  4. Update apps from App Store
  5. If physical SIM: move the SIM card with eject tool. If eSIM: contact carrier to transfer (most allow self-service in their app)
  6. Erase the old iPhone (Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings)
