Day One — Initial Setup
- Power on, follow the setup wizard. Pick language, keyboard, country.
- Sign in with Apple ID. Use your existing one. This sets up iCloud, Find My Mac, App Store.
- Migration Assistant? If transferring from another Mac, choose 'From Mac'. Direct USB-C cable transfer is fastest. WiFi transfer works but slower.
- Set up Touch ID. Fingerprint unlocks the Mac, authorizes Apple Pay, signs into apps.
- FileVault. Enable disk encryption (Apple offers during setup). Protects your data if the Mac is stolen.
Update macOS Before Installing Apps
New Macs ship with the macOS version current at manufacture. Apple may have released updates since:
- Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update
- Install any pending updates BEFORE installing third-party apps
- Some apps fail to install on outdated macOS — patch first
Essential Apps to Install
Apps most users want immediately:
- Browser: Chrome (work) or Firefox (privacy) — Safari is fine but most users have one preference
- Password manager: 1Password, Bitwarden, or use Apple Passwords (iCloud)
- Office suite: Microsoft 365 if your work uses Office, otherwise iWork (free with Mac)
- Communication: Slack, Discord, Zoom, depending on your needs
- Cloud storage: iCloud (auto), Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive
- Notes: Apple Notes (built-in), Notion, Obsidian
- Photo backup: Apple Photos (auto with iCloud) or Google Photos
Security Setup — Critical
- FileVault (System Settings → Privacy & Security → FileVault → On). Encrypts entire disk.
- Lockdown Mode (Privacy & Security → Lockdown Mode). For high-risk users (journalists, activists). Most users skip this.
- Find My Mac (Apple ID → Find My → Find My Mac → On). Lets you locate or wipe stolen Mac.
- Two-Factor Authentication on Apple ID (mandatory in 2026; usually already set up).
- Auto-update macOS (Software Update → Automatic Updates → all on).
Time Machine Backup
Mac doesn't auto-backup without an external drive. Get a 1TB or 2TB USB-C external SSD ($60–$120) and configure Time Machine:
- Plug in the drive
- System Settings → General → Time Machine → Add Backup Disk
- Choose your drive, set encryption
- Time Machine auto-backs up hourly
If your Mac dies or gets stolen, you can restore everything to a new Mac in 1 hour. Without Time Machine, you lose everything.
