How to Erase Your iPhone Before Trade-In (2026 Guide)

Selling or trading in your iPhone? Skipping the proper erase process can cost you money — buyers can't activate the phone, trade-in services downgrade your quote, and Activation Lock locks the phone permanently. Do this right.

Step 1: Back Up First

Before erasing, back up everything (see our backup guide). Once you erase, your data is gone. Don't skip this step — even if you've already migrated to a new phone, having a backup is insurance.

Step 2: Sign Out of iCloud (Critical)

  1. Settings → [Your Name] at the top
  2. Scroll to bottom — tap Sign Out
  3. Enter your Apple ID password
  4. Choose what to keep on the iPhone (doesn't matter — you're erasing)
  5. Tap Sign Out again

Why this matters: If you skip this step, the new owner sees Activation Lock — Apple's anti-theft feature that requires your Apple ID password. They can't activate the phone. Your trade-in gets rejected.

Step 3: Remove from Find My

Should auto-trigger when you signed out of iCloud, but verify:

  1. Open the Find My app on another Apple device or iCloud.com
  2. Devices tab → tap the iPhone you're trading in
  3. If it appears: tap Remove This Device
  4. Confirm

If Find My is still active when you trade in, the phone can't be activated. Always verify.

Step 4: Erase All Content and Settings

  1. Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
  2. Tap Erase All Content and Settings
  3. Tap Continue
  4. Enter your passcode
  5. Confirm with Apple ID password
  6. Tap Erase iPhone
  7. Wait 5–15 min — iPhone erases completely and reboots to setup screen

This is a full factory reset. The phone is now identical to a new iPhone out of the box.

Step 5: Remove SIM Card

Pop the SIM tray (paperclip in the small hole on the side) and remove the SIM. Keep it — you'll need it for your next phone or carrier transfer.

Step 6: Clean and Photograph (Optional but Profitable)

For private sale or top trade-in value:

  1. Wipe screen and back with microfiber cloth + 70% isopropyl alcohol
  2. Clean charging port with plastic pick (lint kills trade-in quotes)
  3. Photograph in good lighting from 4 angles + close-ups of any scratches
  4. Be honest about condition — trade-in services downgrade quotes when actual condition is worse than described

Bad photos lower trade-in estimates by $30–$80. 5 minutes of cleaning + photographing is the highest hourly-rate work you can do.
