📱 Method 1: Check in Settings (Fastest)

This is the easiest and most accurate method if your iPhone turns on.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. Tap About
  4. Look for Model Name — this shows the marketing name (e.g., "iPhone 15 Pro Max")
  5. Look for Model Number — this shows a code like "MTQH3LL/A"
  6. Tap the Model Number once — it changes to the hardware model number starting with "A" (e.g., "A2849")

The Model Name line tells you exactly which iPhone you have. No guesswork needed.

🔎 Method 2: Identify by Physical Features

If your iPhone won't turn on or the screen is broken, you can identify the model by its physical characteristics.

Step 1: Check for a Home Button

  • Has a Home button: iPhone 8, 8 Plus, SE 2nd gen (2020), SE 3rd gen (2022)
  • No Home button: iPhone X and all newer models (2017+)

Step 2: Count the Rear Cameras

  • 1 camera: iPhone XR, iPhone SE (any gen), iPhone 8
  • 2 cameras (vertical): iPhone X, XS, 11 Pro, 12 mini/12, 13 mini/13
  • 2 cameras (diagonal): iPhone 13, 14, 15, 16
  • 3 cameras: iPhone 11 Pro/Pro Max, 12 Pro, 13 Pro, 14 Pro, 15 Pro, 16 Pro

Step 3: Check the Front Display

  • Wide notch: iPhone X, XS, XR, 11, 12, 13
  • Smaller notch: iPhone 13 (slightly smaller), 14
  • Dynamic Island (pill-shaped cutout): iPhone 14 Pro, 15 (all), 16 (all)
  • No notch (Home button + bezels): iPhone 8, SE models

Step 4: Check the Port

  • Lightning port: iPhone 14 and earlier
  • USB-C port: iPhone 15 and newer

🔢 Method 3: Model Number Lookup

Every iPhone has a hardware model number starting with "A" followed by 4 digits. You can find this in Settings (Method 1) or printed on the device.

Where to Find the Printed Model Number

  • iPhone 8 and later: The model number is not printed on the phone. Use Settings or the SIM tray engraving
  • Original box: The model number is on a label on the back of the box
  • SIM tray: On some models, the IMEI is etched on the SIM tray (useful for Apple Support lookup)

💡 Bonus: Check Using Siri

The fastest method of all — just ask Siri:

  1. Say "Hey Siri, what iPhone is this?"
  2. Siri will respond with your exact model name

This works on any iPhone with Siri enabled (iPhone 6s and later).

🔧 Why Your iPhone Model Matters

  • Repair parts: Screen, battery, and camera parts are model-specific. The wrong part will not fit
  • Cases and accessories: Even phones that look the same size (like iPhone 14 and 15) have slightly different camera bumps and button placement
  • Software support: Older models eventually lose iOS updates. Knowing your model tells you how long you will receive updates
  • Trade-in value: Trade-in prices vary significantly between models and storage sizes
  • Repair cost: Pro models cost more to repair than standard models
