Thunderbolt 4 vs USB-C Docks

Two types of docks:

  • Thunderbolt 4 docks ($230–$400): Up to 40 Gbps data, supports dual 4K@60Hz or single 8K, full power delivery. Use the proper Thunderbolt cable (not regular USB-C).
  • USB-C docks ($80–$150): 10 Gbps data, single 4K display only. Cheaper. Fine for casual users.

If you have a MacBook Pro and want dual external monitors, get a Thunderbolt 4 dock. If you're a casual user with one monitor, USB-C dock is fine.

CalDigit TS4 — The Reference Dock

CalDigit's TS4 is the reference dock most reviewers compare against. 18 ports total, 98W power delivery (charges any MacBook including 16-inch Pro), dual 4K@60Hz output. Beautifully designed metal chassis. $400 is steep but if you're set up at a desk all day, the productivity gains pay for it within weeks.

Anker 778 — Best Value Thunderbolt 4

Anker 778 ($280) is 70% the value of the CalDigit TS4 at 70% the price. 12 ports vs 18, but most users don't need all of CalDigit's ports. 96W power delivery is sufficient for any MacBook Air or 14-inch Pro. Recommended as the budget Thunderbolt 4 pick.

OWC Thunderbolt 5 Hub — Future-Proofing

If you have MacBook Pro M4 Pro/Max with Thunderbolt 5 (the newest), OWC's Thunderbolt 5 Hub is the only TB5 dock under $300. 240W power delivery (charges 16-inch Pro at full speed). 4 TB5 ports. Compact size. Best for M4 Pro/Max users who want maximum throughput for video/3D work.
