AirPods Not Charging? Fix for Every Model 2026
You open the AirPods case and the light does not come on, or one AirPod stays at 0% while the other charges fine. This is one of the most common AirPods issues and it is almost always fixable. This guide covers AirPods 1st/2nd/3rd/4th gen, AirPods Pro 1st/2nd gen, and AirPods Max.

🔌 Quick Diagnosis: What's Not Charging?
| Symptom | Likely Cause |
|---|---|
| Case won't charge at all | Bad cable, dirty port, or dead case battery |
| One AirPod won't charge | Dirty contact on that AirPod or inside the case |
| Both AirPods won't charge but case does | Dirty contacts or firmware glitch |
| Wireless charging doesn't work | Case model doesn't support it, or misalignment |
| Charges but drains instantly | Degraded battery (common after 2+ years) |
⚡ Step 1: Check the Basics
- Try a different cable — this is the most common culprit. Use a certified Lightning or USB-C cable
- Try a different power adapter — plug into a wall charger, not a laptop USB port (lower power)
- Check the charging port — shine a flashlight into the case port and look for lint or debris
- Verify the light — when you plug in, the case LED should glow amber (charging) or green (full)
Model-specific ports:
- AirPods 1st/2nd gen, AirPods 3rd gen, AirPods Pro 1st gen: Lightning
- AirPods Pro 2nd gen (2023+), AirPods 4: USB-C
- AirPods Max: Lightning (original) or USB-C (2024 refresh)
🧹 Step 2: Clean the Charging Contacts
This fixes the problem about 60% of the time. Earwax, pocket lint, and skin oils build up on the metal contacts and prevent charging.
- Remove both AirPods from the case
- Use a dry cotton swab to clean the metal contact points at the bottom of each AirPod stem
- Clean the matching contacts inside the case — the small metal dots at the bottom of each slot
- For stubborn grime, lightly dampen the swab with isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher)
- Use a soft-bristle brush (like a clean toothbrush) for the Lightning/USB-C port on the case
- Let everything dry for 2 minutes before putting AirPods back in
🔄 Step 3: Reset Your AirPods
A full reset clears firmware glitches that can prevent charging. This does not erase your AirPods — you just need to re-pair them.
AirPods & AirPods Pro (all generations)
- Place both AirPods in the charging case and close the lid
- Wait 30 seconds, then open the lid
- On your iPhone, go to Settings → Bluetooth
- Tap the (i) next to your AirPods and tap Forget This Device
- With the lid open, press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for 15 seconds
- The status light flashes amber then white
- Hold the open case near your iPhone to re-pair
AirPods Max
- Press and hold the Digital Crown and the Noise Control button simultaneously
- Hold for 15 seconds until the LED flashes amber
- Release and re-pair with your iPhone
🔋 Step 4: Check Battery Health & Firmware
Check Battery Levels
- Open the AirPods case near your iPhone — a popup shows battery percentages
- Or go to Settings → Bluetooth → tap (i) next to AirPods
- On AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 (ANC), check Settings → AirPods for detailed battery info
If an AirPod shows 0% and never moves, its internal battery is likely dead.
Check & Update Firmware
- Go to Settings → Bluetooth → tap (i) next to AirPods
- Scroll down to see the Firmware Version
- AirPods firmware updates automatically when:
- AirPods are in the case and charging
- The case is near your connected iPhone
- Your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi
- Leave AirPods charging near your phone overnight to trigger an update
🔌 Step 5: Try Wireless Charging
If your case supports wireless charging (AirPods 2nd gen with wireless case, 3rd gen, 4th gen, Pro 1/2), try charging wirelessly to isolate the issue.
- Place the case on a MagSafe charger or Qi-certified charging pad
- Align the case in the center of the pad — the case LED should light up
- If wireless charging works but wired does not, the Lightning/USB-C port is damaged
AirPods Pro 2 bonus: The USB-C case also supports charging via the Apple Watch charger.
🚧 When It's a Hardware Problem
- Battery degradation: After 2+ years of daily use, AirPods batteries lose significant capacity. Apple offers battery service for a fee
- Damaged charging port: Bent pins or corroded contacts in the case port require repair or replacement
- One AirPod dead: Apple sells individual replacement AirPods — you do not need to buy a whole new set
- Swollen case battery: If the case looks puffy or the lid won't close properly, stop using it immediately
