AirPods One Side Not Working? 8 Fixes
One AirPod silent, one much quieter than the other, or audio only coming from one ear? This guide fixes one-sided audio on all AirPods models โ usually in under 5 minutes.
Why One AirPod Stops Working
- Audio balance setting โ iOS has a left/right balance slider that's easy to accidentally move
- Low battery on one AirPod โ one earbud may have drained while the other didn't
- Earwax or debris blocking the speaker mesh โ the most common physical cause
- Bluetooth sync issue โ one AirPod lost its connection to the pair
- Damaged AirPod โ water exposure or physical damage to the speaker driver
Step-by-Step Fixes
1Check Audio Balance (Most Overlooked Setting)
iOS has a hidden left/right audio balance slider โ if it's off-center, one earbud will be much quieter or silent:
- Go to Settings โ Accessibility โ Audio/Visual
- Look at the Balance slider โ it should be exactly centered at 0
- If it's moved to L or R, drag it back to center
2Check Each AirPod's Battery Level
- Open the AirPods case near your iPhone โ a battery pop-up appears
- Or open Settings โ Bluetooth โ tap the (i) next to your AirPods
- Check the battery % for Left, Right, and Case separately
- If one AirPod is at 0% or very low โ place it in the case for 5โ10 minutes, then test again
3Clean the Speaker Mesh
Earwax buildup on the speaker grille is the most common hardware cause of one-sided silence:
- Look at the speaker mesh at the tip of the AirPod โ visible wax buildup?
- Use a dry cotton swab to gently wipe the mesh
- For stubborn buildup, use a dry soft-bristle toothbrush โ brush lightly in one direction
- Never use water, alcohol, or liquids near AirPods
- For AirPods Pro: remove the silicone ear tip first, clean the mesh underneath
4Put Both AirPods in the Case and Reconnect
- Place both AirPods in the case
- Close the lid โ wait 30 seconds
- Open the lid near your iPhone
- This forces both AirPods to re-sync with the case and re-pair together
5Forget and Re-Pair AirPods
- Go to Settings โ Bluetooth โ tap (i) next to your AirPods โ Forget This Device
- Place both AirPods in the case, close the lid
- Wait 30 seconds, open the lid
- Hold the Setup button on the back of the case until the light flashes white
- Hold the case near your iPhone โ follow the pairing prompt
6Restart Your iPhone
- Hold Side + Volume Down โ slide to power off
- Wait 30 seconds โ restart
- Reconnect AirPods after boot
- Bluetooth audio routing bugs often clear with a phone restart
7Update AirPods Firmware
- Place AirPods in the case, connect case to power
- Keep your iPhone nearby with WiFi and Bluetooth on
- Wait 30 minutes โ firmware updates install automatically in this state
- Check firmware: Settings โ Bluetooth โ (i) next to AirPods โ Firmware Version
- Compare to the latest version at Apple's firmware page
8Reset AirPods to Factory Settings
- Place AirPods in the case, close the lid โ wait 30 seconds
- Open the lid, hold the Setup button on the back for 15 seconds
- The light flashes amber, then white โ full factory reset complete
- Re-pair to your iPhone fresh
