AirPods One Side Not Working? 8 Fixes

1Check Audio Balance (Most Overlooked Setting)

iOS has a hidden left/right audio balance slider — if it's off-center, one earbud will be much quieter or silent:

1. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Audio/Visual
2. Look at the Balance slider — it should be exactly centered at 0
3. If it's moved to L or R, drag it back to center

2Check Each AirPod's Battery Level

1. Open the AirPods case near your iPhone — a battery pop-up appears
2. Or open Settings → Bluetooth → tap the (i) next to your AirPods
3. Check the battery % for Left, Right, and Case separately
4. If one AirPod is at 0% or very low — place it in the case for 5–10 minutes, then test again

3Clean the Speaker Mesh

Earwax buildup on the speaker grille is the most common hardware cause of one-sided silence:

1. Look at the speaker mesh at the tip of the AirPod — visible wax buildup?
2. Use a dry cotton swab to gently wipe the mesh
3. For stubborn buildup, use a dry soft-bristle toothbrush — brush lightly in one direction
4. Never use water, alcohol, or liquids near AirPods
5. For AirPods Pro: remove the silicone ear tip first, clean the mesh underneath

4Put Both AirPods in the Case and Reconnect

1. Place both AirPods in the case
2. Close the lid — wait 30 seconds
3. Open the lid near your iPhone
4. This forces both AirPods to re-sync with the case and re-pair together

5Forget and Re-Pair AirPods

1. Go to Settings → Bluetooth → tap (i) next to your AirPods → Forget This Device
2. Place both AirPods in the case, close the lid
3. Wait 30 seconds, open the lid
4. Hold the Setup button on the back of the case until the light flashes white
5. Hold the case near your iPhone — follow the pairing prompt

6Restart Your iPhone

1. Hold Side + Volume Down → slide to power off
2. Wait 30 seconds → restart
3. Reconnect AirPods after boot
4. Bluetooth audio routing bugs often clear with a phone restart

7Update AirPods Firmware

1. Place AirPods in the case, connect case to power
2. Keep your iPhone nearby with WiFi and Bluetooth on
3. Wait 30 minutes — firmware updates install automatically in this state
4. Check firmware: Settings → Bluetooth → (i) next to AirPods → Firmware Version
5. Compare to the latest version at Apple's firmware page

8Reset AirPods to Factory Settings

1. Place AirPods in the case, close the lid — wait 30 seconds
2. Open the lid, hold the Setup button on the back for 15 seconds
3. The light flashes amber, then white — full factory reset complete
4. Re-pair to your iPhone fresh
