First — Reset AirPods (Most Common Fix)

  1. Place both AirPods in the charging case, lid open
  2. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for 15 seconds
  3. The status light flashes amber, then white
  4. Re-pair with iPhone: case open near phone, follow on-screen prompts

This factory-resets the AirPods firmware and is the #1 fix for connection drops.

Disable Automatic Switching (Stops Device Jumping)

If AirPods keep jumping between iPhone and iPad/Mac:

  1. On iPhone: Settings → Bluetooth
  2. Tap (i) next to AirPods
  3. Connect to This iPhone → 'When Last Connected to This iPhone' (instead of 'Automatically')

Repeat on each Apple device. Now AirPods only switch when you manually connect them.

Clean Charging Contacts

  • Remove AirPods from case
  • Wipe each gold charging contact (on AirPod stems and inside case) with dry microfiber
  • For wax buildup, use a Q-tip lightly dipped in 99% isopropyl alcohol
  • Let air-dry 1 minute, return AirPods to case

Dirty contacts cause intermittent power, which causes random disconnects.

Update AirPods Firmware

Apple pushes AirPods firmware updates silently. To trigger:

  1. Place AirPods in case, plug case into power
  2. Place case near a Wi-Fi-connected iPhone
  3. Wait 30 minutes
  4. Check firmware: Settings → Bluetooth → tap (i) next to AirPods → look at Version number

Latest AirPods Pro 2 firmware as of 2026 is 7B25. If you're below 7A0, that's why you have issues.

Stop Specific Apps from Disconnecting AirPods

Some apps (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, browser videoconferencing) can grab the audio focus and cause AirPods to drop. Workaround:

  • Quit the misbehaving app fully (swipe up to close)
  • Reopen and reconnect AirPods after the app loads
  • Update the app to latest version (some have fixes)
