What Are Passkeys?

Passkeys are a password replacement created by the FIDO Alliance and supported by Apple, Google, and Microsoft. They use public-key cryptography — when you sign in, your iPhone proves it knows the private key by using Face ID, never sending the actual key to the website. Benefits:

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I lose my iPhone?iCloud Keychain syncs your passkeys to your other Apple devices. New iPhone restored from iCloud Backup also restores passkeys. If you have no backup + no other Apple device, fall back to email/SMS recovery for the service.
Do passkeys work without internet?Yes for the cryptographic verification, but the website still needs internet to acknowledge.
Can I use passkeys with my Android phone?Yes — passkeys are cross-platform. Google's Password Manager syncs your passkeys to other Android devices and Chrome on Mac.
What if my friend wants to log into my Netflix?Passkeys are device-bound. They'd need their own passkey on their device, or you share via QR code (one-time auth).
Does iCloud Keychain require Advanced Data Protection? No, regular iCloud Keychain works fine. Advanced Data Protection (Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Advanced Data Protection) adds end-to-end encryption — recommended for elevated risk users.
Can I delete my passwords after setting up passkeys?Don't delete them yet. Some services use passkey AS A SECOND FACTOR but still require password fallback. Wait 6 months, then delete passwords from those that support passkey-only.
What if I work in IT and need to test? You can have multiple passkeys per account. Add a passkey on your work device + personal device.
Are passkeys backed up?iCloud Keychain backs them up to iCloud (encrypted). 1Password and Bitwarden also support passkey storage now.
Can I share a passkey with family?iOS 17+ supports password sharing groups (Settings → Passwords → Sharing). Passkeys can be shared similarly.
What's the difference between passkey and 2FA?2FA = password + second factor (SMS, app, key). Passkey = single sign-in factor that's already strong (cryptographic + device + biometric). Passkey replaces both password AND 2FA in one step.

Common Concerns

"What if my Face ID stops working?"Passcode fallback always works. Face ID is convenience; passcode is the backstop.
"What if I get hit by a bus and family needs my accounts?"Apple has Legacy Contact (Settings → Apple ID → Sign-In & Security → Legacy Contact). Designate a contact who can access your account after death proof.
"What about my elderly parent who doesn't understand passkeys?"Set up Face ID on their iPhone. Passkeys actually make sign-in EASIER for older users — no remembering passwords, just Face ID. Walk them through one service first.
"What if a service doesn't support passkeys?"Continue using a strong, unique password from your password manager. Add 2FA via authenticator app (not SMS).
