📡 What Is WiFi 7?

WiFi 7, officially 802.11be, is the latest generation of wireless networking. It was certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance in early 2025 and has been rolling out in routers and devices throughout 2025-2026. Here is what makes it genuinely different from WiFi 6/6E:

  • Multi-Link Operation (MLO) — The headline feature. Your device can transmit and receive across 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands simultaneously, rather than picking one band at a time. This means more total bandwidth and, crucially, lower latency because if one band is congested, traffic automatically flows through the others.
  • 320 MHz channels — WiFi 6E introduced the 6 GHz band but limited channels to 160 MHz wide. WiFi 7 doubles that to 320 MHz on the 6 GHz band, essentially doubling peak throughput on that frequency.
  • 4096-QAM (4K QAM) — Denser data encoding means 20% more data per transmission compared to WiFi 6's 1024-QAM. You will only notice this at close range with strong signals.
  • Maximum theoretical speed: 46 Gbps — In practice, real-world speeds of 2-5 Gbps are achievable on premium hardware. Still roughly 2-3x faster than the best WiFi 6E setups.
