MacBook USB-C or Thunderbolt port not charging, not detecting your monitor, or accessories just not recognized? These fixes work for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro on M1 through M4 and Intel chips.

โšก First Thing to Try

Switch ports and switch cables. MacBooks have 2-4 USB-C/Thunderbolt ports โ€” try a different port with a known-good cable. If the other port works, you've isolated the fault to one specific port. If nothing works, it's likely a system-level issue rather than a hardware failure.

Isolate the Problem

1Test different ports and cables

MacBook Air M2/M3 has 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports. MacBook Pro 14"/16" has 3 Thunderbolt 4/5 ports plus MagSafe. Try each port with the same cable and accessory. Also swap the cable โ€” USB-C cables fail frequently and silently, especially braided aftermarket cables that carry data but not full power, or power cables with no data. An Apple-branded or certified USB-C cable is the most reliable test cable.

2Check System Information for port detection

Hold Option โ†’ Apple menu โ†’ System Information โ†’ USB (left sidebar). If your connected device appears here (even with an error), the port hardware is detecting something โ€” the issue is software or driver-level. If nothing appears at all when connected, the port hardware or controller may be at fault.

3Clean the port

USB-C ports accumulate lint and debris from bags and pockets. Use a flashlight to inspect โ€” if you see debris, use a wooden toothpick or a non-conductive tool to gently clear it. Never use metal objects inside a port. Compressed air (short burst, 6+ inches away) can also dislodge loose debris. A partially blocked port makes intermittent contact and causes erratic behavior.

Software & System Fixes

4Restart the Mac

A restart reinitializes the Thunderbolt/USB controller firmware and clears stuck device states. After restarting, connect the accessory before logging in โ€” sometimes connecting at the login screen establishes a cleaner handshake than connecting after the OS is fully loaded.

5Reset the SMC (Intel) or power cycle (Apple Silicon)

For Apple Silicon (M1โ€“M4): shut down completely, wait 30 seconds, restart. This is the Apple Silicon equivalent of an SMC reset. For Intel MacBooks: shut down, hold Shift+Control+Option+Power for 10 seconds, release all, then press Power. The SMC controls USB-C port power management and can get into a bad state after voltage irregularities.

6Reset NVRAM/PRAM (Intel only)

Restart Intel MacBook and immediately hold Option+Cmd+P+R for 20 seconds (until you hear the startup chime twice on older models, or see the Apple logo appear and disappear twice on newer ones). NVRAM stores hardware configuration data that can affect how ports initialize at startup.

7Check Thunderbolt/USB preferences

System Settings โ†’ Privacy & Security โ†’ scroll to "Security" section โ†’ look for "Allow accessories to connect." macOS Ventura and later introduced accessory authorization โ€” unknown USB devices require your approval the first time. If you previously clicked "Don't Allow," the accessory will never connect until you reset this. Also check System Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Login Items & Extensions โ†’ Thunderbolt Accessories for any blocked items.

โš ๏ธ Hub and dock power delivery issues: USB-C hubs and docks that charge the MacBook while also running accessories can exceed the MacBook's bus power budget, causing intermittent port failures. If your MacBook works fine without a hub but fails with one, the hub is likely drawing too much power or backfeeding voltage. Use a powered hub (one with its own power adapter) rather than a bus-powered hub for reliable operation with multiple accessories.

Advanced Diagnostics

8Run Apple Diagnostics

Shut down, then restart while holding the D key (Intel) or power button (Apple Silicon โ€” hold until "Loading startup options" appears, then hold Cmd+D). Apple Diagnostics runs hardware tests including USB/Thunderbolt controller checks. If it reports a Thunderbolt controller error code, that confirms hardware failure. Error codes starting with "PPT" or "TBT" indicate port-level issues.

9Check for macOS update

System Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Software Update. Apple regularly releases Thunderbolt and USB-C driver fixes. macOS Sequoia 15.2 and Sonoma 14.6 both included USB-C reliability patches. A port that "stopped working after an update" is usually fixed in the next update cycle.

10Test with a different accessory type

To isolate whether it's a power delivery issue, data issue, or display output issue: test charging only (no data), test data only (USB drive, no charging), then test display output. A port that charges but won't output video has a DisplayPort controller issue. A port that handles data but won't charge has a USB Power Delivery issue. A port that does nothing at all is either blocked, physically damaged, or has a controller fault.

โœ… Thunderbolt 4 vs USB 3.2 vs USB 2.0 cables: Not all USB-C cables are equal. A USB 2.0 USB-C cable (often included with cheap accessories) passes power and basic data but can't handle DisplayPort output, Thunderbolt, or fast charging. If your cable is very thin and flexible, it's probably USB 2.0. Use a Thunderbolt 4 certified cable (marked with a lightning bolt icon) for monitors and docks, and a 240W USB-C cable (USB PD 3.1) for fast charging the 16" MacBook Pro.
