🔍 Common Touch Bar Issues

  • Completely blank/black — no icons or controls visible
  • Frozen — stuck showing one set of controls
  • Unresponsive to touch — display works but doesn't respond
  • Flickering or glitching — unstable display
  • Missing controls — some buttons not appearing
  • Touch Bar not changing with different apps

🔄 Quick Fix #1: Restart the Touch Bar Process

The fastest fix for most Touch Bar issues:

  1. Open Activity Monitor (Spotlight search or Applications → Utilities)
  2. In the search bar, type TouchBarServer
  3. Select the process and click the X button to quit it
  4. Click Force Quit
  5. The Touch Bar will restart automatically within seconds

Alternative method via Terminal:

sudo pkill TouchBarServer

🔄 Quick Fix #2: Restart Control Strip

If only the Control Strip (right side) isn't working:

  1. Open Terminal (Spotlight → Terminal)
  2. Type: killall ControlStrip
  3. Press Enter
  4. The Control Strip will restart automatically

💻 Quick Fix #3: Restart Your MacBook

A simple restart often resolves Touch Bar issues:

  1. Click Apple menu () → Restart
  2. Wait for MacBook to fully restart
  3. Check if Touch Bar is working

If frozen completely: Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to force shutdown, then power on.

⚡ Fix #4: Reset SMC (System Management Controller)

The SMC controls Touch Bar power. Resetting it can fix hardware-related issues:

For MacBook Pro with T2 chip (2018-2020):

  1. Shut down your Mac
  2. Press and hold Control + Option + Shift (left side) for 7 seconds
  3. While still holding, also press and hold the power button
  4. Hold all four keys for another 7 seconds
  5. Release all keys, wait a few seconds
  6. Press power button to turn on your Mac

For MacBook Pro 2016-2017 (no T2):

  1. Shut down your Mac
  2. Press Shift + Control + Option (left side) + power button simultaneously
  3. Hold for 10 seconds
  4. Release all keys
  5. Press power button to turn on

Note: Apple Silicon Macs (M1/M2/M3) don't have SMC — just restart instead.

🔄 Fix #5: Reset NVRAM/PRAM

NVRAM stores settings that can affect Touch Bar behavior:

  1. Shut down your Mac
  2. Turn it on and immediately press and hold: Option + Command + P + R
  3. Hold for about 20 seconds
  4. Your Mac will appear to restart
  5. Release the keys and let it boot normally

Note: Apple Silicon Macs don't have NVRAM reset — just restart instead.

⚙️ Fix #6: Check Touch Bar Settings

Your Touch Bar might be configured incorrectly:

  1. Go to System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS)
  2. Click Keyboard
  3. Find "Touch Bar shows" setting
  4. Make sure it's set to "App Controls" or your preferred option
  5. Check "Show Control Strip" is enabled
🔧 Fix #7: Update macOS

Software bugs can cause Touch Bar issues:

  1. Click Apple menu () → System Settings
  2. Go to General → Software Update
  3. Install any available updates
  4. Restart after updating
👤 Fix #8: Create New User Account

Test if the issue is account-specific:

  1. Go to System Settings → Users & Groups
  2. Click the + to add a new user
  3. Create a temporary admin account
  4. Log out and log into the new account
  5. Check if Touch Bar works there

If Touch Bar works in new account, the issue is with your user profile (corrupted preferences).

🍏 Fix #9: Boot Into Safe Mode

Safe Mode loads only essential software:

Intel Mac:

  1. Shut down your Mac
  2. Turn on and immediately hold Shift
  3. Release when you see the login window
  4. "Safe Boot" appears in the menu bar

Apple Silicon Mac:

  1. Shut down your Mac
  2. Press and hold power button until "Loading startup options" appears
  3. Select your disk
  4. Hold Shift and click "Continue in Safe Mode"

If Touch Bar works in Safe Mode, a third-party app is causing the issue.

⚠️ Hardware Issues

If software fixes don't work, you may have hardware damage:

  • Flex cable damage — connects Touch Bar to logic board
  • Touch Bar display failure — OLED panel damage
  • Logic board issue — T1/T2 chip failure
  • Liquid damage — corrosion on connections
