Spotlight is Way More Powerful Than You Think
Cmd+Space opens Spotlight. Beyond just search:
- Math: '147 * 23' returns the answer
- Currency: '50 USD to EUR'
- Unit conversion: '5 miles in km'
- Definitions: 'define ephemeral'
- Recent files: 'budget' shows recent files matching
- Apps: 'mail' opens Mail.app
- Contacts: 'sarah' shows recent communications
- Web search: any unmatched query goes to your default search engine
Hot Corners — Move Mouse to Trigger Actions
System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Hot Corners (bottom right). Configure:
- Top-left: Show Mission Control
- Top-right: Show Notification Center
- Bottom-left: Lock Screen
- Bottom-right: Sleep Display
Now move mouse to that corner and the action triggers. Faster than keyboard shortcuts.
Stage Manager (macOS Ventura+)
Control Center → Stage Manager. Apps form 'stages' — groups of related windows. Stages stack on the left side, click to switch. Like a souped-up Mission Control. Best when you have 4+ apps open simultaneously.
Mission Control + Spaces
F3 (or three-finger swipe up on trackpad). Shows all windows of all apps. Top bar shows your Spaces (virtual desktops). Click + to add new Spaces.
Power-user move: assign Spaces by app. Mail in Space 1, Slack in Space 2, browsing in Space 3. Switch with Ctrl+arrow keys.
Quick Look (Press Spacebar on Files)
In Finder, select any file and press Spacebar. Preview opens — image, PDF, video, even code. No need to open the actual app. Press Spacebar again to close.
For images: arrow keys cycle through other selected files. For PDFs: scroll. Way faster than opening Preview.
Screenshot Tools — Cmd+Shift+5
Cmd+Shift+5 opens screenshot menu:
- Capture full screen / window / selection
- Record full screen / selection
- Show timer (5 sec, 10 sec)
- Save to: Desktop, Downloads, Documents, Mail, Messages
Default save location is Desktop. Change in Options to keep your Desktop clean.
Touch ID for Sudo (Terminal Power Move)
If you use Terminal: enable Touch ID for sudo:
- Open Terminal
- Run: sudo nano /etc/pam.d/sudo
- Add this line at the top: auth sufficient pam_tid.so
- Save (Ctrl+O, Enter, Ctrl+X)
Now sudo prompts use Touch ID instead of password. Never type your sudo password again.
Hide Dock When Not in Use
System Settings → Desktop & Dock → 'Automatically hide and show the Dock' = ON. Dock disappears, more screen real estate. Move mouse to bottom edge to bring it back.
App Exposé — See All Windows of Current App
Three-finger swipe DOWN on trackpad. Shows all windows of the currently-active app. Useful when Safari has 8 tabs open and you can't find one.
Cmd+~ — Cycle Through Windows of Same App
Cmd+Tab cycles through DIFFERENT apps. Cmd+~ cycles through WINDOWS of the SAME app. Most users don't know this exists. Faster than clicking on windows.
Force Quit Frozen Apps — Cmd+Option+Esc
App frozen? Don't go to Activity Monitor. Press Cmd+Option+Esc. Force Quit menu appears, list of running apps. Pick the frozen one. Force Quit. Done in 5 seconds.
AirPods Auto-Switching to Mac
If you have AirPods on iPhone and start a video on Mac, AirPods auto-switch to Mac. If it's annoying:
- On Mac: Bluetooth → AirPods → Options
- Connect to This Mac: 'When Last Connected to This Mac'
Now AirPods only switch when you click them in Bluetooth menu.
