MacBook Pro M4 Not Turning On
The MacBook Pro M4 (2024) features Apple's M4, M4 Pro, or M4 Max chip, up to 24 hours of claimed battery life, Liquid Retina XDR display, and up to 128GB unified memory. When it won't turn on or shows a black screen, the cause is usually a drained battery, software crash, or misconfigured display setting. Most issues are solvable without visiting Apple. Work through this guide in order.
π Step 1: Identify the Symptom
- No response at all β no light, no fan, no sound: Dead battery or power delivery failure
- Fans spin but screen is black: macOS crash or display issue
- Apple logo appears then shuts off: Boot loop β macOS corruption or failed update
- Boots to a flashing folder with question mark: macOS can't find the startup disk
- Charging LED is green (or no LED) but won't wake: Deep sleep state β needs a force restart
- Black after a macOS update: Update failed mid-install β Recovery Mode will fix this
π Step 2: Charge with MagSafe or USB-C
MacBook Pro M4 charges via MagSafe 3 and both left-side Thunderbolt 4 / USB-C ports:
- Use MagSafe 3 with the included 96W or 140W adapter. The LED on the MagSafe connector shows charging status: amber = charging, green = full
- If no MagSafe LED: check the connector is seated (it snaps magnetically) and the cable isn't damaged at the connector end
- Alternatively, charge via USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 port with a 96W+ GaN USB-C charger β plug into either left-side port
- Leave on charger for 15 minutes minimum before pressing the power button β MacBook Pro M4 battery is large and needs time to accumulate enough charge
- Try a different outlet β surge protectors and power strips can fail silently
π Step 3: Force Restart
MacBook Pro M4 uses Apple Silicon β there's no separate SMC chip, but a force restart resets the power state:
- Press and hold the Touch ID / Power button for 10 seconds
- The Mac will shut down completely β you may hear a click
- Release, wait 3 seconds, then press the power button normally to turn on
- If it boots to Recovery Mode (macOS Recovery logo): that's fine β you can boot normally from there
- For a Mac stuck in deep sleep: hold the power button until the screen goes completely dark, then boot again
π₯οΈ Step 4: Check the Display
Fans running but black screen usually means the Mac is on but the display has failed:
- Listen for startup chime β if you hear it, the Mac is on and it's a display issue
- Connect an external monitor via HDMI (using the MacBook Pro M4's HDMI port) or Thunderbolt 4. If the external display works, the built-in display needs repair
- Shine a bright flashlight at the screen at a sharp angle β if you see dim images, the backlight has failed
- Check display brightness: After booting (even to a black screen), press F2 / F6 to increase brightness β it may simply be at zero
- After a macOS crash, the screen can wake to full darkness at minimum brightness β pressing the keyboard helps confirm boot
π» Step 5: Enter macOS Recovery Mode
Recovery Mode reinstalls macOS without erasing your data (Reinstall macOS option):
- Press and hold the Power button until you see the startup options screen (showing volumes and gear icon)
- On Apple Silicon MacBook Pro, holding the power button automatically boots into Recovery/Options mode
- Click Options β Continue to enter macOS Recovery
- In Recovery:
- Reinstall macOS β reinstalls macOS Sequoia on your existing drive without erasing data
- Disk Utility β First Aid on your startup disk β fixes disk errors that prevent booting
- Startup Security Utility β if set to Full Security with a missing user, you may need to change policies
π οΈ Step 6: Reset NVRAM / PRAM
On Apple Silicon Macs, NVRAM resets happen automatically during Recovey Mode restart, but you can manually trigger it:
- Shut down the MacBook Pro M4 completely
- Press the power button to turn on, then immediately hold Option + Command + P + R for 20 seconds
- The Mac may restart during this time β that's normal
- Release after the startup chime plays twice (or after 20 seconds) and let the Mac boot normally
- NVRAM reset clears display resolution settings, startup disk selection, and other firmware-level configs that can prevent booting
β Quick Fix Checklist
- β MagSafe 3 LED confirmed: amber (charging) or green (full)
- β Charged 15+ minutes before first power attempt
- β Force restart: held power button 10 seconds
- β External display tested via HDMI or USB-C
- β Screen brightness keys pressed after apparent boot
- β Recovery Mode entered (hold Power on startup)
- β Disk Utility First Aid run on startup disk
- β macOS Reinstall attempted via Recovery
π§ Still Won't Boot?
If Recovery Mode can't find your startup disk, or macOS reinstall fails, the SSD or logic board may have failed. MacBook Pro M4 logic board repairs start at $300β600 at Apple or $150β400 at third-party shops. Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers offer free diagnostics to identify the exact component.
