โ ๏ธ Before You Start
MacBook Pro keyboard replacement is complex and requires:
- Multiple precision screwdrivers and specialized tools
- Careful handling of flex cables and delicate components
- Anti-static precautions (ESD wrist strap recommended)
- Patience and attention to detail
If you're not comfortable with micro-electronics repair, professional service is recommended.
โ What You'll Need
- Pentalobe screwdriver P5 โ for bottom case screws
- Phillips screwdriver set โ various sizes (00, 0, 1)
- Plastic spudger/pry tools โ for safe component separation
- Tweezers โ for connector manipulation
- Anti-static wrist strap โ to prevent ESD damage
- Thermal paste โ if removing heatsinks
- Isopropyl alcohol (90%+) โ for cleaning adhesive
- MacBook Pro replacement keyboard assembly โ matched to your model
- Work mat and screw containers โ to organize parts
๐ Step 1: Backup and Power Down
- Back up all data via Time Machine or iCloud
- Shut down completely (Apple menu โ Shut Down)
- Unplug power adapter and all peripherals
- Wait 10 minutes to allow capacitors to fully discharge
๐ Step 2: Remove Bottom Case
- Flip the MacBook over (screen facing down on a soft mat)
- Remove all P5 Pentalobe screws from the bottom case (usually 8-10 screws)
- Carefully lift the bottom case away โ there may be adhesive strips holding it in place
- If stuck, gently work a plastic spudger around the edges to separate
- Set the bottom case aside carefully
๐ Step 3: Disconnect Battery
Critical safety step: Disconnecting the battery prevents accidental short circuits while you work.
- Locate the battery connector (large rectangular plug on the right side of the logic board)
- Using tweezers or a small spudger, gently pull the battery connector straight out
- Do not force it โ if it resists, gently rock it side-to-side while pulling
- Set the connector aside and do not reconnect until reassembly is complete
๐ง Step 4: Remove Top Case Screws
- Identify all screws holding the keyboard/top case assembly to the chassis
- There are usually screws around the top perimeter, near the hinges, and under the keyboard area
- Remove each screw carefully, organizing them by location (create a diagram if needed)
- Use the correct screwdriver size (Phillips 00 or 0 usually fits)
๐ป Step 5: Disconnect Keyboard Flex Cable
- Locate the keyboard flex cable connector (usually near the top of the keyboard or beneath it)
- The connector has a locking tab or bracket โ gently lift or slide it to release
- Using tweezers, gently pull the flex cable connector straight out
- Be extremely careful โ flex cables tear easily
๐ฑ Step 6: Remove the Keyboard Assembly
- Once screws are removed and the flex cable is disconnected, carefully lift the keyboard/top case assembly
- It may have adhesive around the edges โ gently work a plastic spudger around the perimeter
- Go slowly to avoid breaking any components or damaging the frame
- Set the old keyboard assembly aside
๐งน Step 7: Clean the Frame
- Use isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth to clean the frame where the keyboard sits
- Remove all old adhesive residue โ new adhesive won't stick if the surface is dirty
- Inspect for any damage to underlying components
โจ Step 8: Install New Keyboard
- Check alignment: Position the new keyboard assembly over the frame to ensure it fits properly
- Apply adhesive: If the new assembly uses adhesive tape, apply it carefully around the perimeter
- Connect flex cable: Insert the flex cable connector and secure the locking tab or bracket
- Press down firmly: Apply pressure around all edges to activate the adhesive (if applicable)
- Align screws: Reinstall all screws in their original locations
- Tighten carefully: Use proper screwdriver pressure โ do not over-tighten
๐ Step 9: Reconnect Battery
- Carefully push the battery connector back into its socket
- You should hear/feel a click when it seats properly
- Ensure it's fully inserted and aligned
โฌ ๏ธ Step 10: Reassemble and Test
- Carefully align the bottom case with the frame
- Reinstall all P5 Pentalobe screws (hand-tighten first, then snug)
- Power on the MacBook
- Test all keys โ tap each one to ensure response
- Check for stuck keys or unresponsive areas
- Use Keyboard Viewer (System Preferences โ Keyboard) to verify all keys register
โ ๏ธ Troubleshooting
Keyboard not responding after reassembly:
- Flex cable may not be fully seated โ power off and reseat the connector
- Check that the locking tab is properly engaged
- Inspect the flex cable for damage or tears
Some keys don't work:
- Power off and remove the bottom case
- Reseat the keyboard flex cable completely
- Check for debris or manufacturing defects under the keyboard
